Your timeline is off. Training of the mujahideen ended in 1989, and most of "ours" were opposed to the Taliban.

One of the biggest needs was coal, and that proved difficult to fly in in bulk so they had to modify many of the planes in order to able to load, fly it safely and quickly off load it. This idea that the evacuation in Kabul was the greatest airlift in US history is preposterous compared to Berlin and the ramifications of a failure EXPONENTIALLY higher.

 

We have conceded a safe haven and training base to the enemy, and have betrayed those who put their faith in our ideals.

The CIA ended their program when the Soviets exited. Driving them out was the program objective. When that was achieved the program was terminated.

The CIA program ended in 1989. Taliban did not come to power until 1996. The CIA program's focus was actually on mujahideen who later formed the Northern Alliance in opposition to the Taliban.
