If gangs only killed other gang members they would be a non issue. Like I could give zero cares if a gang member is killed by another gang member. How many non gang members do they kill? Mass shootings are a bigger issue.

Ironically Giuliani implemented pretty tough gun laws in NY and homicide rates came down. Time will tell what happens now. Maybe nothing happens. Typically big cities are a different ballgame compared to rural areas and less densely populated areas, but obviously Constitution applies the same. Scalia argued there is leeway for regulation, but he is dead and buried.

Its not the SCs job to assess the effectiveness of legislation. Thats our job. The SCs job is to determine whether legislation is constitutional or not. If We The People want only the wealthy and well-connected to be able to obtain a permit to carry a firearm, then we have to amend the constitution to make such discrimination lawful. Thats all there is to it.

The reason crime went down after the 80s was access to abortion starting in 73.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if some areas have harsher penalties for possession of an 11 round magazine than murder in the coming decades.

 

well if that is the case, someone caught merely possessing the magazine can waste a ton of people and it won't result in a longer sentence? It's time for the Supremes to strike down all the idiotic state laws that don't meet the strict scrutiny test. And what really needs to happen is to allow citizens to sue those who deprive them of their constitutional rights under 42 USC 1983

 

Don't forget the increasing availability of cell phones making police response a much greater threat to criminals.

I've heard some attribute it partly to reductions in lead poisoning, though I'm not sure how true that is.

Any explanation worth it's salt also has to explain why it occurred worldwide in almost every area of the world, most of them with heavily varying laws on all sorts of issues.

That's what makes me suspect cell phones might be behind a fair chunk of it.
