Iowa Republicans want to ban SNAP recipients from buying meat, white bread, and American cheese (msn.com)
Why don't they just ban SNAP beneficiaries from eating altogether?

I don't know what's more tragic, deciding to cut out basic grocery staples or that they already have this ban in place for pregnant women and children in another program.

If it weren't for Republican politicians in government, then we wouldn't have something to compare to how awful the world can get in the supposed land of plenty.

The solution is simple. Get the bums a job. Problem solved.

It has always bothered me when food stamps are used to buy soda or candy. Soda I'd definitely put in the category of a treat and not essential food, similar to how it's not allowed last I checked to use food stamps to buy alcohol. White bread may be inferior to whole grain for nutrition, but that seems like taking it too far. It's still actual, sustaining food that may be chosen because it's cheaper.

I do feel like a line should be drawn somewhere though. I assume you don't think they should be able to buy alcohol with it.

Perhaps for a simpleton the solution might be "Get the Bums a Job" - but even these folks should have figured out that this is not a solution - been tried many times .. many ways and didn't work..

For many the silly comment does not even apply - folks who already have jobs folks -- sometimes two or three. Then you have folks in between jobs.

This is yet another example of the level of idiots we have in office... It is one thing for regular folks to not think to much about what they speak "Bums can just get a job" .. The politician should at least have thought it though a little bit further .. have assessed at least some academic commentry in decision making process .. and so there is no excuse for such idiocy .. and violation of the principles in which they claim to believe .. Liberty -- Rule of Law--- Free and fair markets - things about which those who have not thought much are completely unaware.

Not to throw doubt on this fine article, but I searched through the bill and couldn't find any reference to meat, cheese or bread. Are they getting that from some other source or is this simply BS?

It's on the end of page 16 of the bill.

This also goes to show that women and children are being denied meat and other basic food staples.

Rather than Iowa rules going into effect to match up with existing dietary rules in that state, I think they should loosen their existing food rules instead.

If anything says that Republicans don't care about pregnant women and children, it's this.

People need to eat more meat to remain healthy! I have a high-carb, low-protein diet, and I know how unhealthy it is. I'm fat and sick and can't exercise to lose weight or get better. I can't escape this situation.

Nothing in the documentation quotes says they are being denied. Its not in the documentation... just your mind.

Thanks for the find. I can see why I didn't find the references to meat and cheese and so forth; they were not in there, just the redefinition of eligible foods to WIC eligible items. However WIC items are pretty broad based:

    upload_2023-1-20_19-4-19.png

So cheese and bread are on the list. I agree with you that meat should be on the list, but other than that I see nothing wrong with this list as it eliminates soda and snacks; junk foods that are decidedly unhealthy and lead to obesity.

I'm glad we agree on the meat, but I also admit that this might be being framed in slightly disingenuous terms to push an agenda.

The list you show specifically says whole wheat bread, so perhaps white bread is excluded, which is probably too far. Canned fish is meat, just one of the healthier forms of it (in moderation due to mercury). Seems odd to exclude something like skinless chicken breasts though. There's some evidence things like salami causes cancer, but I don't think I'd exclude that either as it's actual food that addresses the problem of hunger - unlike soda and fruit juice.

Juice shouldn't be on the list. Juice is not much better than soda.

I used to work in Social Services and at that time WIC was far more restrictive; Milk, Cheese, Juice Cheese, Cereal...a lot of the basics. So this expanded WIC list is far more generous than what I remember. It seems duplicative however to have a SNAP list simply replicate what's already available on WIC. So meats should definitely be on there. But other than that, I think it's great to trim SNAP of a lot of the junk food (which probably is what consists of most SNAP purchases).

Its a national disgrace that any military are on the dole. Its easily explainable though. Young Soldiers get married and have children too fast, before they can really afford it. As an OLD SOLDIER... I saw it again and again over the years. It was managed years ago in ways that would be unacceptable today.

I was thinking that - what is the current minimum wage there - is it over or under the poverty line?

I actually thought the food shown to discredit that looked delicious, and I had no idea why no one ate it.
