“Soros-backed”: The GOP’s favorite attack on the man prosecuting Trump, explained

Donald Trump’s outraged response to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s indictment of him contained the usual mix of bombast and self-pity, with a predictable dollop of conspiracy-mongering. One line of attack stood out in particular: He accused Bragg of being “hand-picked and funded by George Soros.”

Trump wasn’t alone. The alleged Bragg-Soros connection has been everywhere in the Republican response to the indictment, including in comments from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, and a host of other prominent Republicans and Fox News coverage. It often gets shorthanded into a two-word phrase: “Soros-backed.”

Soros, a nonagenarian Holocaust survivor and billionaire financier, is a longstanding hate figure among conservatives. Over the past two decades, elements of the right in both the United States and his native Hungary have engaged in a concerted campaign to turn Soros into a boogeyman — the shadowy power behind transatlantic liberalism.

Though Bragg has never been directly funded by Soros, the accusation of a link isn’t entirely out of whole cloth — Bragg’s 2021 campaign for district attorney does seem to have indirectly received some of his financial support. But the intensity of the accusation certainly doesn’t seem proportionate to the tenuousness of the connection.

With so many lies being spewed by right wing media it's somewhat dubious to label the Soros lie as the most recent one. Let's say it's one of the more recent ones to really catch on. Just another in the arsenal of lies and half truths meant to muddy the water as we get ready for Individual 1 to be charged and booked.

It is my fervent hope that the judge has the wisdom to issue a gag order on Don. It's the next worse thing that can happen to him other than a conviction.

 

Didn’t the left do the same thing to the Koch brothers, even going as far as a NYC hospital refusing to take a $50 million dollar donation from them because they we the Koch brothers?

 

Soros gave $1 million to the PAC Color of Money whom spent big money on Braggs's candidacy. Additionally, Soros' son, daughter in law, and wife all donated directly to his campaign.

That isn't misinformation. It's a fact that Soros donated money that ended up in Bragg's campaign war chest.

Because it makes it sound as though Soros backed Bragg directly as well as had a hand in Bragg being chosen to be a candidate for the DA's office. Neither is accurate.

 

Yes it is. And if that was what Individual 1 had said in his statement it wouldn't be a problem. The statement, however, is intentionally misleading.

Which is not the same as Soros Backing Bragg. It is more equivalent to “Soros backs Democrats and Bragg is a Democrat ergo…..maybe, possibly, could be…..

Doesn't matter. Soros'money went into Bragg's coffers. Soros directed the money to go there and Bragg knows where the money came from.

 

What a terrific example of just the kind of misinformation that thrives inside the right wing sound chamber. Take the incredible duplicity of the text inside the box for Joe Gonzales. "His campaign was 82% funded by Soros aligned groups and sources." Another tenuous, non-specific connection blown way out of proportion for the consumption of those willing to accept what is tantamount to propaganda with critical thought.

 

You don't know that Bragg wasn't hand picked by Soros. No doubt Soros directed where the money went. He did contribute over a million dollars. No doubt he had a day in how it was spent.

 

Do you think Soros would give money to a group who would then go on to donate to a candidate Soros didn’t like?

 

No doubt deciding where the money ends up was a condition of the contribution.

 

C'mon man. If there was any evidence he had, rather than Trump's baseless allegation, it would be all over right wing media. "Soros backed" in reference to Bragg has become an unsubstantiated right wing meme. Yet it's a steaming pile.

Like it or not 40% of the murders last year occurred in the seventy odd districts in which Soros funded and back DAs held sway. It is a fact that Bragg seems almost completely unwilling to put anyone in jail other than Trump
