For once, you're probably right, because there will be nobody left alive to revolt if Pooteen launches a nuke. I can live with that, even though I've had some really good times with some Russian hotties, many of whom didn't even speak English. But... The international language of love, they were intimately familiar with!

If that were true they likely would have already done it. Ethics aren't exactly a Russian thing, nor even trying to keep Ukraine intact to be worth ruling. No I didn't say nukes on Moscow, or even on Russian soil, I said nukes on Russian forces. There is a difference. Strategic nuking of civilians is considered a step beyond tactical nukes on military forces, particularly military forces invading another country.

Soon DILL?? Exactly how the 'F' long is 'soon'? Putin's not getting younger you know, the Russian army's not getting any bigger or better equipped, it's losing territory not gaining it and the Ukrainian army certainly isn't the one that has elements staging revolts, matching on its capital or shooting down it's own aircraft.

So how long is 'soon' Dill. Please, give us your best guess. Because frankly? I don't think the English language definition of 'soon' means what you seem to think it does.

no.... in this case the bad thing about bluffing is everyone knowing Putin's just yammering on as usual, everyone's pointing to him with tears of laughter in their eyes and all nodding sagely saying..."so you'll nukes huh?....yeah....of course you will.....jog on fella"
I mean I even doubt Russian MOD would heed a release order from Putin....
So, no the bad thing about bluffing with nuclear weapons is that everyone knows Putin's a weak little wanker with nothing to leverage and nowhere to go.

    But hey...thanks

I think Putin understands his actions.
    Look logically
    1. The Russians have a clear superiority in nuclear capability over NATO countries.
    2. The Russians have a disproportionate superiority in missile defense systems over NATO countries.
    3. The Russian economy, as the ridiculous sanctions have shown, is far more resilient than the NATO economies.
    4. In the event of a nuclear exchange, the Russians would have a clear advantage - first because of Russia's size, second because of economic components (such as natural resources, a diverse climate from the arctic to the sub-tropics, great scientific potential.... and much more).
    5. Russia's territory (most of it) is located on ancient basalt plates, which means it is less prone to earthquakes and other negative impacts....
For example, if the Russians were to fire a missile at Yellowstone volcano...do you understand the consequences? (no such precedent in Russia)
Another example. Everyone knows, since the days of the USSR and the Cold War, about laying nuclear charges in the tectonic faults around the US, Their explosion would completely destroy the entire American coastline. And if you consider the fact that virtually the entire U.S. economy is located along the coast, it would destroy everything.
There is no such thing in Russia. (I wrote to you above about the basalt tectonic plates that Russia is on.)
All in all, the Russians have a clear and significant advantage over the NATO countries.
And the question is, why should the Russians tolerate NATO aggression?

    1. To begin with, the so-called "Cuban Missile Crisis" was provoked by the United States. The U.S. deployed missiles in Turkey, and the USSR, in response, announced the deployment of missiles in Cuba.
    2. Today we have a similar situation.
NATO is expanding eastward in violation of agreements. The Russians have said many times that this is unacceptable. NATO has not given a damn about what the Russians think. And they were going to admit Ukraine to NATO.
Putin has been warning NATO against this since 2007. But you know what happened.
And today the Russians, just like during the Cuban Missile Crisis, only respond to aggression.

By the end of this year, you'll see everything.

I'm wondering why you write a comment without personal insults to your opponent? It is common for you to insult someone who has a different point of view. Or were you the one who didn't write the comment?

....all that follows is of course very exciting....but highly questionable..... ultimately for Russia though all rather irrelevant.

    1. do they.....hmmm?
    2. have they......hmmm?
    3. sanctions are aimed at the military industrial sector and yes they have started to bite...very significantly....for a start that's why you have to go to Iran for kiddy killing drones...where's your ball bearings coming from....we could go on
    4. you can play shoot bangs all you like but your comment fails to understand the purpose of the various systems and their utilisation
    5. is that right...I didn't know that...do you study rocks and stuff?

I believe you said words to a similar effect last year. (I'm still waiting.)

I write what I deem appropriate to the post in question. Lets be clear, to the extent I've insulted you it's been when, and only when you post manifestly extravagant (and easily refutable) claims about the military, historical, moral or otherwise progress of this war on Russia's (or rather Putin's) behalf.

I take absolutely zero pleasure in the death and maiming of tens of of thousands of Russians soldiers or the suffering of their families at home. Indeed, were it up to me and I had a magic wand? I'd wave it and make it so that this war never happened. I'd make it so that that there was peace between Russia, Ukraine and the west, with the soldiers back in their homes with their families and Russia as a whole safe and prosperous, enjoying close ties with it's neighbors in the EU and the rest of the western world.

But I can't. And I can't because of one one, Putin. This is his war, no one else's. And every time I insult you? It's because your doing his work.

On another thread about WW 2, I stated my belief that all sides use propaganda and disinformation in any conflict.
That was the case with the participants of WW 2 and remains in place today in what appears to be a continuation of the Cold War.

I've served my country and remain loyal to it, warts and all so I'm not surprised to hear that the former USSR was only responding to US nukes in Turkey.

    Re:
Do you think that what you regard as NATO's Eastward expansion could simply be that Ukraine and other territories that were formerly in the USSR simply prefer Western style governments and lifestyles?

Another question, what's wrong with Ukrainians deciding for themselves what form of government and alliances they want?

Finally, do you think that Putin is trying to reunite the former USSR and do you think that reuniting the former USSR is a popular idea among the Russian people.

I'm eager to hear the Russian point of view.

    Thanks,

if the Russian economy is doing so well....why the need to impose a windfall tax on Russian industry...???

....anyway I'm sure Rosstat has a firm grip on the numbers.....interesting that they're doing this on the pre-war profit basis, are they expecting the Western companies that have now left to pay as well?

I only hope they find a way that will end nuclear intimidation once and for all. Correct me if I'm wrong but most of those who've been "throwing shapes" do come from over that way.
Cooperation is a wonderful thing. :handshake:

    This thread ignores the deobvious.

    1) There is no evidence to support the possibility of a "nuclear winter". Carl Sagan was one of its biggest promoters yet even he admitted before he died (referred to in his biograph that the evidence din't ) ) the concept of nuclear winter.

    2) Chinese nuclear capabilities are way overstated.

    3) While Russia is far,far larger than the United States, A majority of Russia's population and industry is concentrated in land area smaller than that in the United States.

Ball bearings are produced in Russia. For example, in the city of Rostov on the Don there is a powerful factory that produces a huge amount of them. There are also factories in other cities.
Maybe the fact that Russia has a developed industry is the reason why Russians were the first in the world to create hypersonic rockets?
As for "baby drones," maybe it is more profitable for the Russians at this stage to simply buy them?
The Russians produce drones at a different level. For example, the Poseidon submarines. Or Stealth drone "Hunter", which has now been put into mass production.

Joint flight of the UAV "Hunter" and a fighter Su-57.

Do you understand what you are writing?
Do you think NATO's expansion to Russia's borders is a fantasy?
And whoever is talking about it should be insulted? According to your alleged logic.

    1. It doesn't matter what countries want. Including Ukraine. If the Russians believe that NATO expansion is a threat to them, then the opinion of the Russians must be taken into account. For example, if the Russians put missiles in Nicaragua, Mexico, Cuba, and these countries would like to have Russian bases on their territory. For example, like Venezuela or Cuba, how do you think the Americans would react to such events?
    2. Once again, it doesn't matter what Ukrainians, Cubans, Mexicans, Poles...etc. want. There are several important centers of power. Their opinions take precedence. Unless, of course, you want peace. If you can't reach an agreement, you start a war. And the guilty party is the one who first broke the agreement and provoked the conflict.
    3. Of course Putin does not want the restoration of the USSR.
Firstly, because in this case, poor countries will have to be supported. For what is Russia doing this if the Russians can get what they want through diplomacy?
Secondly, Putin does not support communist ideas. If the USSR is restored, then it is necessary to restore the socio-political structure of society, that is, socialism. Putin is opposed to this.

here we go again with the hyper thingy'ma'jig whatsits....this would be the same thingys where the lead scientists have been arrested because they're not actually working as advertised....anyway I think we've already put to bed this bolloxy myth of hyper-sonic doohdads.....;)......I always wondered how those guys could convince their bosses that a 1970s engine and antiquated internal systems could be transformed into some kind of inter-galactic planet melting wonder weapon...as usual all packaging and no substance....like the T-16 and the SU-57 etc....

....yes but not for military use or large vehicles (military and commerical) or railway rolling stock....did you see the latest Rosstat figures on railway carriage and locomotive production....it's tanked. The issue with ball bearings is well known as there contracts being tracked in China Malaysia for them.

I don't understand why you wrote that? Does Russia have a budget deficit? So what?
What kind of budget deficit is there in the U.S.? What is the foreign debt there? What is the British debt? Is there a budget deficit there?
Simply put, can you name one country that doesn't have a deficit?

All kinds of ball bearings are produced in Russia. Now they are increasing production. And maybe they buy some types of products. So what? In the USA, congressional hearings were held, where it was announced that a lot was being purchased for the needs of the US army (I don't remember exactly how much, but a lot. I was even surprised how many) components there are in China.

I'm sure you're right. There were some rather bad figures published by Rosstat the other day regarding manufacturing where other than Military production most everything else is down especially when compared to pre-war days. So, basically the economy is now re-purposing itself for Military production. According to Rosstat Just about all other sectors food, pharma, light/medium engineering, transport etc. are down from last year and significantly down from pre-war. I only mentioned ball bearing specifically because 90% of the military bearings as well as heavy industrial bearings for the oil/gas/marines sectors etc came from SKF which left Russia. Leaving was a huge problem as well as people leaving being a huge problem as well....a lot of engineers and scientists and IT specialists and lawyers and bankers.
The situation is only going to get worse don't you think? Now that all those fiscal reserves the shrills were warbling on about have gone and windfall taxes on the oligarchs are being raised to fill in ever widening funding gaps. I'm pretty sure the oligarchs are not going to be too happy funding Putin's 10 day special military operation based on the fact that we are now on day 475 is it? Anyway 1.5 years into the 10 day special military operation there are cracks appearing in the mighty Russian economy...inward investment for example which is critical for the future development of its economy is now basically zero. Which is sad when you think how much was going on pre-war and now it's zero. Inward investment is very important for a country, it is the R&D and the development of factories and plant and machinery and datacenters. In short its a reflection on what people think of you as a country, its capability.....it's managers and it's workforce and it's researchers. Inward investment is zero. I know when the 10 day special military operation first started and when the 1st round of sanctions were imposed all the shrills here said..."hey look...nothing to see here sanctions are not working!" and some people without much understanding of these things still do. Only they are now starting to bite. The thing about sanctions is they are a long term strategic tool; they take time to bed in. They are now and the effects of sanctions will seriously affect Russia for possibly the next 20 to 30 years.

Anyway I'm sure this is not a problem for your Russia but it probably might be for the unemployed and that forgotten group of people the hidden unemployed - those that are laid off on "unpaid leave" which is about 6% of the workforce.

These countries produce....they invest....they sell and buy freely. They have diverse economies. Russia doesn't. Its a kleptocracy attached to a now dwindling oil well. Now there is practically no market for its oil or gas there is nothing else upon which it can trade.
