When WAS America great?

America’s ongoing mission to “build a more perfect union” stalled in 2016, when disgruntled malcontents threw a hissyfit against progress, and insisted that the nation’s Greatness was a thing of the past.

Precisely when that utopian construct occurred has remained vague and nebulous.

Despite the economy now thriving, the unemployment rate being kept very low, wages and consumer confidence rising, global inflation falling, etc., some can be extremely subjective in citing a national heyday:

Some may even be celebrating a personal observance of the apogee of America's greatness today!

For me, it was great when we had less than 20 million living in California. As for the nation, if you were a white male, the 50s were probably your best decade.

 

First one must answer the question as to what makes a country great? Hint it has little to nothing to do with having a strong central government.

 

The far left Democrats keep asking, “When was America great?” One time was during World War II when we led the war against the Axis and Japan. After the Civil War, there were movements towards equilty, and the United States became an industrial powerhouse which brought wealth to millions. It became a beacon to the world. People clamored to come here are still clamoring to come here. Is is perfect? No, but what system is?

My question to the far left is, which country is “perfect?” Can you name one now or one is history that was? I have yet to see an answer from them.

 

Our economic success was more ideal when one person could support a family with one job. Now we have families with both parents working instead of staying with their kids and also one or two of them working two jobs.

Unemployment isn't the only thing that matters. Wages and hours and how many jobs a person has to work to feed their family is also something we should be addressing.

Let me feed my kids again and give them an economic future-MAGA

 

In my opinion, America was great right up until Trump was elected in 2016.

 

Not a real response. I see it's not about the success of Americans and family. Instead it's about the hatred of one man.

 

This nation depends heavily on California's GDP. It's where most of our wealth is produced. I do agree that the 50s was good for white people. That's how we know that when they say "Make America Great Again", what they really mean is "Make America White Again"

I believe that at no point in our history America has been greater than it is now. And I at every single point in our history, except when Trump was President, I would have said the same.

 

IMO it was under Bill Clinton. No race-hustling, no BS, and being about HELPING ALL PEOPLE instead of hurting the other side (also, yeah, there was a BJ incident, SO?). Also I feel like race relations were much better at that time.

 

It's a completely objective response. Objectively, America is not great when the President is subservient to a foreign dictator, or when the President order children to be separated from their parents with no intent to ever reunite them, when the President uses his position for profit (and even admits it publicly) or when the criminal President incites an insurrection so he can become a dictator. It's not great when this same criminal sex abuser encourages an enemy nation to invade our allies... but at least that's compensated by the fact that now we know his criminal WILL be held accountable and going to prison.

 

During Clinton a President lying was more a big deal than a President harassing women. It was great that ALL Presidents (not just Democrats) were held accountable by voters for lying; but women would opine that not being harassed is more important to them.

 

You know what was also a big deal back then? PROOF! EVIDENCE! The "victim" actually had to remember when and how and where it happened.

I completely agree. Without an explanation of the term 'great', answers can only be personal opinions.

As for myself, I believe that America is still 'great'. Not perfect, not harmonious, but still great. We have freedoms and we have the protection of a mighty military. Our healthcare system, while not easily accessible to all, is still very competent and - in some areas - world class. Opportunities abound for those who seek to advance.

 

Exactly! Back then evidence ruled over political following of a client. Especially when evidence is a PUBLIC statement by the guilty party.

If a former President were to say something like... I dunno... "those documents were mine and I refuse to return them".... they wouldn't have all those unconditional followers screaming "No... he didn't STEAL them". But NO woman would be required to remember what the date was when she was raped 30 years ago.

 

It was great for straight white Christian males almost all the time, very very spotty for just about any and every other group of people though.

Bet it was also great for other countries when they weren’t on the receiving end of our pillaging in history.

In the ensuing 235 years These United States have become THE GREATEST NATION ON EVER EARTH. Government BY THE PEOPLE has changed not only America but the whole world. Freedom, freedom for any individual to succeed regardless of their family tree altered the expectations of humanity. Humanities accomplishments since President Washington could not even have been imagined in the wildest of dreams.

NO "they" don't! Every true American has been insisting America IS Great since it became evident that what tRaitor tRump wants is to Make America HIS.
