Do you think all the civilian workers in the Dept of Defense will walk off the job if we cut their pay by 5%?

    I don't.

But if they do we can replace them with new workers who are not so demanding.

The head of the department. Its the only logical way to get anything done given the ineffectiveness of both Houses of Congress.

    Nonsense.

Without a draft you will not find enough 18-year old Republican volunteers to fight a major war with.

They might not all quit, but you can sure bet that they'll show their displeasure in different legal ways.

Those who quit, sure, unskilled workers can be hired who'll need to be trained; vetted and proven. Could take years to get the workforce to be as well trained as it is now. In the meantime, the American poeple would have to suffer.

If thats the case as you maintain, then the 18-year old Democrat, independent and whatever Republican volunteers will pick up the patrotic flag of victory and fight a major war while the unwilling Republican 18-year olds watch and cheer from the sidelines.

I'm cool with linking them to the private sector. We should pay federal wages at the average of their private sector counterparts. Their wages follow the average up or down.

Of course, I would fire 20% of the federal workforce and increase their work week to 50 hours to match the private workforce as well. Reduce benefits including pension to match the private sector as well.

You can work them 50 hours per week, but you'd have to pay them overtime after 40 hours. Unless your salaried in the private sector, most people work a 40 hour work week.

I don't think you could reduce or eliminate pensions to match private sector as i believe most federal employees are covered under a collective bargaining agreement which states what level of benefits they receive.

If you fire 20% of the federal workforce, you'll have 20% less effectiveness since the impact on such agencies which are critical for national defense such as the ATF, FBI, CIA, Homeland Security, US Military, NOAA, Dept of Energy (nuclear reactors, etc), etc.

You just can't wave a magic wand and say your going to cut 20% off the top of the government without doing your homework to review the potential impact.

We don't have a draft now and it's mostly Republicans in the military.

But in the modern world of missiles and instant communications we may not have time to draft an army.

The 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, which President Obama signed into law on Dec. 31, 2011, includes a 1.6 percent pay bump for service members, effective Jan. 1. Obama recommended that figure in his fiscal 2012 budget proposal. Civilian federal employees still are subject to a two-year pay freeze that began in January 2011.

Gee and I was worried that a 0.5 % which is about say $150 pay rise for the year would send the Greatest Nation On earth reeling into depression.

    3 dollar a week wage rise isn't a rise at ,all ,

All these little spending excesses add up over time and someday they may be too heavy for the US economy to support.

Because they are compensated far more than equal positions in the private sector.

It's over $350 a year, but when you do the math, that's a lot of money. Since you won't be paying for it, why should we care what you think?

You do know it's not really a 'freeze' don't you? They'll still get their 'regularly scheduled' salary bumps because it's part of their union contract. It's govt mumbo-jumbo for 'we're not changing a thing, but you'll be stupid enough to think we are.'

You do realize that I was referring to the first part of that release in response for those saying Obama is "screwing the military!!!". They are actually receiving over 1% more starting last Sunday than what has only been proposed for other federal employees. Well deserved as well I believe.

You're right... Obama isn't screwing the military... he's screwing the country.

November can't get here soon enough.

Obama wants to change that, hence the start of this thread.
