Wayne is taking a break and asked to be banned so he's not tempted to spend too much time here. I think he's planning on coming back in the fall. He does answer his emails though so you should hear from him soon.

I think we are better off when government has power over military. If military has power, it abuses that power...always. Governments do too, so a system of checks and balances is needed. Like England has a Parliament and a Monarchy, America has a Congress, Senate and President...these types of counter-balances are needed for liberty and democracy (or any semblence to them).

Something like the UN, but I'm not sure if the UN in its current form is seen as legitimate by many nations. An international governing body would need to have very limited powers for powerful states like America to accept it without being in control of it.

While I think Obama is a good and intelligent man, I doubt he will cause world peace. I hope the Israeli conflict can be resolved once and for all without a lot of death.

My views on that are unorthodox. The most common position is probably that democratic processes lend legitimacy. But this is a thin veil for American policy. America does what it wants with or without negotiation precisely because nobody can challenge its military. I think intelligence combined with compassion lend legitimacy, and I advocate sophisticated testing of leaders for that.
