It is not a programed response to believe that Israel is surrounded by enemies that would destroy Israel as soon as they believe that they could get away with it. Many arab leaders, especially Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have so stated repeatedly.

Ambivalent.

On the one hand, Israel is an economically successful social welfare state with a universal single-payer health care system that affords its Jewish citizens an admirable level of social security.

On the other hand, despite being economically successful, it begs for and receives billions of dollars from the US taxpayer whose quality of life assurance is nowhere near the level of the Israeli citizen, and its continuing illegal seizure of land via the subsidization of religious fanatics is, of course, repugnant, and counterproductive to promoting regional, equitable, peace and stability.

Palestine and Israel will need to recognize one another before progress is achieved. Both radical visions of an Eretz Yisrael that expands to swallow Arab Lands and a Middle East in which Israel is eradicated are fantasies only conducive to more human misery.

If it continues on its apartheid path whilst confiscating the land of others, it will become more noxious to the community of civilised nations, and that would be a shame. Its social welfare policies and regulated capitalism are admirable, and well worth preserving - especially if they were to be achieved without foreign subsidization.

If Israel can clean up its act, it will benefit itself and its reputation. It already has much going for it.

Israel has a very well-funded political lobbying machine exerting enormous influence over many in Congress and apologists aplenty, but the constant outflow of US wealth is exemplified by the maintenance of 662 overseas bases in 38 foreign countries, residual and resilient money pits from the Cold War. The nation-building fiascos in Iraq and Afghanistan, from with the US is finally extracting itself, were a sobering reminder of the price paid for presumptuous meddling, even with noble intentions interspersed amidst the arrogance and covert schemes.

Israel should be respected to the extent that any sovereign nation should be respected by others, no more, no less, and be held to the same standards of human decency - sans pom poms and excuses. It is incumbent upon every nation to act in its own interest, recognizing that it precisely what the others are doing, regardless of all the schmoozy political rhetoric and ingratiating bushwa.
