Mmmh, so you think that Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther King Jr, Desmond Tutu, etc. were weak and did rotten things?

Threads like this turn me more and more towards atheism.

From an atheistic point of view God is several things. God is a traditional focal point to ease the anxiety the human mind generates when it cannot account for all factors in its environment. Its why we tend to pray at moments of great anxiety, or when we are sad or near death.

God is the ruler who controls our great unknown, but to an atheist is no more real than Santa Claus.

What was the magical power that Jesus had ? Serious question. I know you don't believe in magic and "miracles" such as the ones described in the Bible that Jesus did but if you were to guess (hypothetically) what would the natural power that Jesus possessed be ?

..and what is the name ?

I only named three, but can think of many more, known and unknown ones. They may still be grossly outnumbered by nasty Christians. Nasty people - be they Theists or Atheists - grossly outnumber the good ones in general (At least that's what I think when I'm in a misanthrope mood.)

However: three that don't fit your definition would suffice to render the definition invalid. Even one would be enough.

Nope, one isn't enough. The idea of a "god" or "gods" started a looooong time before these people were even born.......they just followed along.

AND just as there are good decent people who are christian or believe in a "god" or "gods" there are plenty of good decent people who don't believe in a 'god".....they don't need a "belief" or a fear of some made up nonsense to be good people.

I’m afraid you won’t go very far in science with such a lax attitude towards what constitutes a proper definition.

Indeed the idea of a “god” or “gods” goes back so far in time that it’s impossible to accurately trace back the motives behind such an idea or who had it first. You are of course free to do some good guesswork, but that’s what it will remain: guesswork.

I never said there were no good decent people, who don’t believe in God/Gods. In fact I don’t even think that.

How do you know those three don't fit my definition?

    Answer: You don't.

Of course not. Which is why I asked you, whether you think they do. Apparently you don't, which shows that you and me have rather similar moral parameters. But what's "weak" and what's "rotten" is pretty much in the eye of the beholder. A gun-slinging violent racist would almost certainly see these three people as weak and their deeds as rotten. And a gun-slinging violent racist might be either a Theist or an Atheist.

I am an Atheist and I don't claim that God does not exist. I don't know whether or not a god exists, however I don't believe in one because no theist has ever shown me empirical evidence that one does exist.

god was invented by man to try and explain the things they didn't understand themselves. Originally it was gods & godesses , such as the sun, the moon etc etc then god became a way of controlling people (religion) by use of threats of what god would do to them if they didn't believe - which still goes on today.

So in essence god was originally an explanation, then a control item .. now god is just an irrelevance

Atheists do not need to define God, they simply take the theists definition, see how it fits into reality, and makes a decision from there.

Any being with supernatural powers would be a god.
Said being does not, and has never, existed.

    You may have such criteria.

I could be just blatantly honest and tell it like it is: a theist making claims of a deity, that dont exist, is just a f'cking liar

I gave you the answer of what 'god' is. Nothing to debate and any diviation from the fact, is just more of them stupid liars, with their head up their butts.

    Agreed?

I don't think most atheists would say their position is that god doesn't exist, but rather that there is no evidence that supports that belief .

Saying that god doesn't exist is like claiming that ghosts or aliens don't exist. It's a claim that can't be validated. I can however give you examples or reasons that support why I don't believe.

We may have mistaken Heretic for someone interested in deabting with actual, real atheists rather than someone looking for a strawman to validate his own beliefs against.

I guess basically the thing that created us. Some 'magic/supernatural element' in there.

Christian God tends to be all-powerful and all-knowing. Why do you ask?

Nah, he's most likely a satirical poster. People with such borderline insane thought processes do exist though so I like to pretend I'm talking to one of those rather than just some troll.

    ?
The answer was very specific as directly stated by Jesus when he said, "I am the Truth,"...

That is the way men are supposed to survive in Life.
Men must worship what is true, accept it, and act upon it rationally.
    Men think.

Thinking is the sole survival tool for us.
If we follow the liars or believe the lies ourselves, we create fantasy worlds that cannot stand long in the face of Realities.
And, if we do believe those Fantasy Worlds men concoct, then we are technically insane by living in fantasies.

Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy?

If not, what are you claiming does not exist? Can you please define Tooth Fairy to me?

So, de facto, you are repulsed by borderline personalities trying "to validate his own beliefs" because that is insane.
You worship Truth, yourself, in the sense of the word, that you seek it and abide by the Truth when you think you have found it.

You are actually a real Christian, arguing with religious people who have dveloped fantasy interpretaions you oppose and reject?

Do you believe in The Truth when it confronts you and act upon that with faith in truth as the best course for action?

During the Civil Rights Movement, white people rejected Martin Luther King as a trouble maker, until they saw the truth of the courage and the horrible action of the forces that opposed the truth of what King said.

Blacks were not separate and equal.
Blacks did not have Freedom of Speech.

That was the Truth inside the walls of a supposedly free country.

The price to be paid by King in the exercise of the freedom of speech, a right open to Anti-war movements, the Gay Movement, the Feminist movement, etc was NOT open to Blacks.
    That was the Truth.
Americans realized this and the Laws changed.
