    duh...the reason ships go there in summer is because pack ice breaks up permitting them to get closer to shore, it's. melting!... the ships get caught when the wind drives the broken islands of ice together trapping them...

    a little research and some common sense would go far in eliminating dumb posts like yours...

    :roflol: what an idiotic post...research and tourist ships visit the antarctic in summer because pack ice breaks up in summer ! IT"S MELTING! the previous winter's solid ice pack breaks up into large ice flows leaving open water, a change in wind direction can rapidly close those open areas trapping ships in the bays, which is precisely what happened...predicting the opportunities for ships to navigate in summer falls on the experience of the ships crew and the vagaries of weather and has nothing to do with any passengers or researchers on board... just a modicum of intelligence would go along way in this forum...but hey it's a free world and if you want to keep making dumb posts carry on...

    Antarctica is a gigantic heat sink, which can trap moisture, released, by melting of perennial ice, which cools overall surface temps.

    But temporary local cooling is just that, temporary. GHGs have not degraded, so warming is on the way, including for Antarctic sea ice, which is subjected, to warmer and warmer currents.
