Caitlin Tagner, a high school sophomore from North Carolina, is very clear about who she blames for her school's "nasty" lunches: "I blame Michelle Obama." It's great that schools are trying to make lunches better, they're not doing a very good job of it. "Starving kids at school isn't exactly a way to (get) kids' obesity down," Tagner added. "I feel like it's just been taken too far." On Monday, the Associated Press reported that some school nutrition directors want the Department of Agriculture of loosen up the new-ish lunch requirements so students will stop throwing away their food.

Anthony Gallimore, a high school senior from Georgia, was more willing to acknowledge others might be at fault. "It's gotta be a combination of Michelle and the servers at the school. No one person could take all the blame," he DM'd The Wire. "Though, the servers are probably just doing what they're told."

At Gallimore's school, most people "put up with" the lunch, but several have started bringing their own. "Health-wise, I'd say it's an illusion of benefit. The food even LOOKED more presentable before," he wrote. "And if nobody chooses to eat the gross food, then it can't possibly be helping anyone. It's just being thrown out anyway."

Tagner and Gallimore are two of millions of students across the country adjusting to the new (as of the 2012-2013 school year) lunch standards mandated by the Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act, a law Michelle Obama championed. Some kids like the lunches, but the ones who don't have school cafeterias are concerned.

My take - Kids have enough to worry about at school. Now they're being fed crap. We are a free country - and free citizens should have the right to eat what they want. And while I understand the need for public schools to provide better food options, the below is not it.

Whether it's Climate Change or eating healthier, we can't force people to accept it against their will. Put the info out there and let the people decide what they want to do.

This represents the stupidity of big government.

The kids are mad at a woman who lectures them about calories but stuffs her face with greasy cheeseburgers, Coke, and ice cream.

i agree - it's too much, too far.
Michelle has equated food to drugs. When Nancy Reagan promoted the DARE program, it was fighting to prevent a bad substance that people were taking that was illegal to do. With food, I don't think it's the government's job to make us eat what they want. It's pretty creepy if you ask me - and I'm hella liberal on most issues. Again, encouraging is one thing, forcing is a whole other thing.

all Michelle Obama did was convert a whole generation to be libertarians or conservatives
she taught them the true evils of a large intrusive tyrannical liberal government

My high school kids leave campus and walk to fast food restaurants for their lunches along with most of their friends to avoid the new nasty lunches. At least they are getting exercise.

As a conservative, I fully approve of Michelle's Nasty Lunch Initiative. This one program alone is doing more to teach high school students about government overreach than any civics classes ever could. Even if their civics class is taught by liberals, the whole liberal doctrine is completely erased when the student receives their lunch tray filled with nastiness, and for that, conservatives around the country owe a huge thank you to Michelle Obama for actually doing more for the future of conservatives causes.

I actually like the legislation. School districts get funds from the Federal Government to provide healthy meals to students. Student's on the free or reduced lunch programs need a healthy source of nutrition, and those who do not get free or reduced lunches are able to bring their own lunches from home. Children have been complaining about school lunches for longer than I have been alive. However, from what I have observed personally while eating lunches with my grandchildren fairly often is that the lunches in their schools are very well balanced and the portions are, in my opinion, generous. Each school district will follow the guidelines differently so I suspect it's the school districts that are doing a poor job in the cases being presented here.
Here is what my grandchildren have to choose from on their lunch menu today.

    SALISBURY STEAK W/ GRAVY
    CHICKEN NUGGETS
    RICE
    BROWN GRAVY
    Chef Salad w/Turkey/Ham
    BLACK-EYED PEAS
    SEASONED CABBAGE
    Seasonal Fresh Fruit
    ASSORTED FRUIT JUICE
    Whole Grain Cornbread
    MILK VARIETY
    KETCHUP

    Sounds yummy to me.

yeah, but that's not what's happening in all the public schools.
either way, there has to be a middle ground

You are correct that the central government has seized control of local school districts by controlling the money.

Local schools dance to the tune coming from washington dc on every subject or policy imaginable because they want the money.

But the policy being dictated by the feds often does not fit the needs of the local school.

Bused-in kids from the inner-city and the projects are saying on social media that the worst thing about healthy lunches is they are not nasty enough and conducive to the daily food fights in school cafeterias. A healthy and simple slice of cheese on a dry bun does not make for messy, gloppy ammunition in a food fight. The simple but healthier lunches are also easier for custodians and cafeteria workers to clean up following the fights. Where is the fun in that? they ask.

Moreover, suppressing the kids routine daily food fights deprives them of social interaction between one another.

    Bring back the spaghetti!

I agree that it isn't happening in all public schools, which is my point exactly. If all public schools had the same lunches, then I would see a point being made that the Federal Government has over reached. The fact that there are so many different lunch room menus shows that there is a lot of flexability in the new law and it is left to the local governments to determine what they will serve in their schools. As long as the school districts are taking Federal funds for food programs, I think its best those funds be used for healthy foods.

You might want to ask yourself how much of that has to do with Michelle Obama and how much of it has to do with local school budgets.

My God, this cannot stand! Tyranny! Dictatorship! Brussel (Foreigners! Yuck!) sprouts! We've porked, gobbled and inhaled too much grease for too darn long to turn back now. How dare Mrs.Dictator chide us for being blubbier than sumo dinosaurs! It is the God given right of every American to balloon up to the point of needing a government provided cart to get us around the house, And free polyester stretch pants for the womenfolk.

"The problem is when that fun stuff becomes the habit. And I think that's what's happened in our culture. Fast food has become the everyday meal." - Michelle Obama

Michelle is not saying kids should never eat fast/junk food, but once in a while. I think she's been consistent with that even though I don't like how far some of these "healthy lunch" tactics have been implemented.

Oh dont get me wrong, I agree with her stance on foods. I just thought the comment was a bit snark and wanted to show the picture of her eating a burger because it was so easy to find.

Maybe the answer is simpler. We know that before fast foods over-took our society, people ate healthier and worked hard, less obesity.
Today, processed foods are the norm, and people tend to not work as hard as compared to the intake of fuel.
IMO, government should not be demanding one thing from the citizens while it does contrary.
    Another million dollar getaway, MO?
    Fast foods, anyone?

Even simpler would be to end food stamps.

Then people will have to work for their food and hopefully spend their money more wisely.

But libs who depend on the low income obama voters would never agree to do that.

My school lunch was pretty good. Any day you could order any of the following.

Cheeseburger, Burger, Fries, Chicken fingers, bosco sticks, pizza, oreo pies, candy bars, salad, chicken salad, chicken wrap, veggies, etc.. And then we would also have a random rotating one daily like Tacos, spaghetti, etc..
