I'm using history and reality, why do you avoid it?

I have a mixed couple living next door along with black families down the street either way, the next street over is predominately black, banks don't care what color you are if your credit rating is good.

You keep talking decades ago I am talking NOW. I live in a predominately white town who's previous mayor was Black. Next to a predominately white city who's previous two term mayor was black.

Stop wallowing in the 1950's things have RACIALLY changed in case you haven't noticed.

So what white guilt am I supposed to be carrying? I got my arse beat in the 7th grade because I befriended one of the first blacks to come to our school. The fraternity council had a meeting to have me banned because in high school one of my best friends was a black guy and I took him to a sorority meeting in our plot to shock and awe the white social debutantes and their mothers. I lived segregation and sat in the back of the bus with blacks because we felt it was wrong, I saw the colored only and whites only signs. And I lived the change that has come about and for people to blame to problems WITHIN the black community on white racism, to blame the falling apart of the black family on white racism is to avoid the real problems within the black community and solutions to those problems.

 

But all is well now, the Confederate Battle Flag has been taken down.

 

What is with you constantly distorting what others post? Is that the only way you can debate, create some strawman and the hack it up ?

The fact is that the dysfunction that is endemic in the black community was fomented by the nanny-state, and became widespread regardless of good economic times.

You refuse to address the overwhelmingly obvious problem of fathers not in the home, and dropout rates. Instead, you do as almost all liberal deniers do, and blame this latest imaginary scapegoat "white privilege", and prolong the cancer of "victim-hood".

 

Yes. Racism is now ended. Blacks can finally stop blaming everyone else for their dysfunctional culture.

The schools here in my Deep South city were integrated in 1965. We all went to the same schools. All my kids went to the same schools the black kids went to. The black kids have MORE opportunity for entrance and funding into college and none of my kids went, they joined the military and got higher educations.

So exactly what are they and I supposed to feel guilty about? What "intercultural issues" are keeping black people down or is this just more big-words to hide what REAL problems exist within the black community that are keeping them down?

 

So how should we discuss history then? Put in a trigger warning for all the sensitive white people?

 

How about discussing it. Not re-writing it.

Again, we are talking about the legacy of institutional racism. Do you actually think that if the tables were reversed, that white people would "get over" being enslaved, being denied good employment, education, forced into ghettos, lynched et al. so soon after it ceased? It's a complicated system of historical identity, legacy of federally endorsed discrimination, and modern economic hurdles.

 

We are not all created equal in our ability to achieve success. I don't understand why society has a difficult time coming to terms with one of life's basic realities.

We each have our own unique set of strengths and challenges as we navigate through life.

 

Finally, an intelligent post. All the preview really pointed out to me is that white people are very uncomfortable talking about race. Show looks worthy of a look. I'm always fascinated by what young people are thinking and talking about. Clearly college age kids today are less hung up about race. That's good, but we have SO much farther to go.

SO much further? Because you wont be satisfied until all white people are in chains? I think we have gone plenty far enough. The only problems black people have left are those that they bring on themselves.

Yes, yes they would get over it, because thats exactly what they did. Do you think the Irish, Scots werent enslaved, raped, starved, beaten, murdered, sent to other countries ect for centuries? The poor in England didnt have it much better. There was no welfare, no free hand out while under the rule of dictators, but you sure as hell go to war and die for them. You dont hear whites endlessly carrying on for generation after generation for hardships their ancestors had, generally they get on with it. Lynchings were 3500 odd, any idea how the Irish population was decimated? yet all we hear about is blacks being lynched even though 1300 Whites were lynched also. Whites faced hardship in far greater numbers and far worse than blacks in European countries.

Most tend to look at the freedoms and opportunities we have now as a result of the hardships and struggles our ancestors had to endure. We owe it to them to get on with it rather than wallow in self pity, which would be not only be disrespectful it would be foolish since it was they who endured it for our benefit. Granted none of this makes what happened to the ancestors of blacks or whites right, but today we equally share the freedoms of the West and owe it ourselves and them to get on with it.

 

Of course low IQ, poor impulse control and lack of future time orientation has nothing to do with their problems. It's always us.

 

Who is rewriting history? If anything, the brutality of slavery and Jim Crow has been downplayed in the collective American imagination. I've heard people claim on this forum more than a few times that black people had stronger families and better values under slavery than today.

 

You're talking about European slavery which took place hundreds of years ago, most long before the Atlantic slave trade. Slavery covers a wide gamut of history, and the institution differs greatly depending on the time and place. The U.S. during slavery was a unique economy and point in history, and the subjugation that followed only ended relatively recently. We're not talking about eons ago. Black people have not had an equal place with whites ubiquitously in the eyes of the law until recently (although you could make the case that still isn't true). I benefit tremendously from what little wealth and assets my family accumulated, largely through the help of low-interest housing loans. That's just one example of how institutional racism set blacks back in the race toward prosperity.

So I finally watched the video and I am having a hard time figuring out what everyones problem is. It's a guy just asking kids how they feel about being white. I will be curious to see the final product, but if this is successful, I would be interested to see a string of these on the various races. It could produce some really thoughtful commentary.

 

face it, most whites dont want to talk about slavery the same reason germans dont like talking about the jewish holocaust. apparently, only then does history become irrelevant, you can only talk about the noble action of white people in history, apparently.

 

we have enough programmes about how whites feel about other races, like 99% of programmes are about the "white gaze". its refreshing to see how white people deal with themselves in terms of race.

 

What is the 'white gaze'? Never heard of it.

 

I can tell you what the deal is: these kids look pretty foolish and it's got the righties here worked up about it. They WANT the white youth of today outraged but they really arent so it outrages THEM.

But you'll never see it on the "various" races. This is liberal propaganda, pure and simple. They're showing us the effects of public school brainwashing, and they're trying to say "this is normal", as if "all" white kids were insecure about their history and their biological makeup. I very much doubt you'll see anything like this on, let's say, Hispanics.
