This cop was being a bully, plain and simple. She never should have been arrested.

I've been asked to put out my cigarette every time I've ever been pulled over in Texas. I live in Texas. I've been pulled over at least ten times. You tend to want to smoke when you get pulled over, with the stress and all.

So in my view, telling her to put out her smoke is pretty normal.

In my view, idk. I always put them out when ordered to do so. It's Texas. They are cops... Makes more sense to me to follow the order and possibly not go to jail, than it is to fight it and definitely go to jail.

I would bet money that if she had put out her smoke, we wouldn't be discussing this, as she would have gotten her ticket and been on her way.

Just in case you never heard. In the dark blue state of Ct one city was pushing hard for an ordinance to outlaw smoking in your personal vehicles. Eventually shot down.
I realize your post is correct, just thought you might like to know it almost happened.

You would have to prove that:
    A) The cop was acting out of legal bounds, which he was not.
    B) That she died specifically because the cop was acting out of his legal bounds, which she did not.

That's amazing, I sure hope the Feds trash that whole poke of TX pigs. Time for some federal courts then federal prison. And I hope he (they) have a great time while doing time, like that (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) pig in So. Carolina surely is.

Notice what tough guys thoseTX pigs are? Dragging a woman out of her car and beating her down hard for no turn signal. I've been stopped here a couple times (brake light out, no uturn) and the CHP instructed me to stay in the car. Maybe white helped out, ain't black so will never know.

Yeah, nice work pardners, I'll bet everyone in TX is sure proud right about now.

    Unreal.

Black people just have to get lucky and hope white cops don't mess with them. It's does not matter if you say something or nothing they are out to get you. That is how white cops are in American. White culture has history thinking they better than other culture which is a fact.

I am ok with just firing a cop for acting like a jerk and abusing his power, the video proved that

she forgot to use a turn signal, she did not rob a bank or something.....

    Sheesh.

Could Sandra Bland have done anything to avoid this situation? Yes, of course, absolutely. Just follow orders, be polite, and smile. So it's all her fault.

Could the officer have done anything to avoid this situation? Yes, of course, absolutely. Just be polite, issue a warning, and let it go. So it's all his fault.

There was no reason for the officer to demand that she put out her cigarette. That was simple harrassment for no purpose. There was no excuse for refusing to do so, that was just asking for trouble.

What we had here were two people both of whom insisted on taking control of the situation and of the other person. One of them died, the other will probably find his career DOA. So who was the winner in this battle of egos?

Neither her or the officer won but I would almost bet that someone tries to profit off of it.

It's an unfortunate fact of life that when the authorities have personal problems, the citizens need to bend WAAAY over and suck it up.

I remember visiting a friend in Canada back around 1978. I had a small pickup full of expensive musical instruments, and my friend and I had been doing some clubs in Toronto. I came back through the border around Massina NY, and it was raining. The customs station had a covered area that could hold about a dozen vehicles, and it was deserted. The customs people made me park across the street in the mud, and open all my instrument cases, which they dumped out into the mud before they went through the vehicle, taking their sweet time. I had nothing, so they found nothing. After about 45 minutes, they waved me through, but I had to dry off the instruments and put them back in the cases. Most of them were permanently damaged.

I had enough sense to smile, be polite, answer any questions, and otherwise say nothing. Otherwise, god only knows what they'd have done to me. I always think of that occasion when the right wingers here pontificate about how all problems with the cops are caused by people with bad attitudes. The cops are NEVER part of the problem. I figure I got off easy.

Oh, and thanks here to Hercules for putting this sort of thing into proper perspective.

Common sense says they can be used as a weapon......... 900°C is pretty damn hot! I used my car cigarette lighter as a weapon when forced, to this day a thug in Baltimore has a nice round burn mark on his forehead.

What law says she can't smoke in her own car?

    - - - Updated - - -

If she were white, you can bet the right would defend her constitutional right to smoke.

Smokes must be very valuable these days. I don't know one single person who would not have put it out. In fact most would have before he got to the car.
