My take - OK, she was upset for getting pulled over and getting a ticket - as many have. She is standoffish and asks why she can't smoke in the car. I do feel the officer was a bit too aggressive and pushed as well.

BUT, she did suffer from PTSD and depression and it seems she hung herself while in jail. The progressives are over zealot for thinking there is more to her death than suicide.

Her death looks similar to James Howell's. Same jail and circumstances. The place should be looked at from an independent institution. All other investigation and prosecuting entities should be independent as well.

The second she refuses to put her cigarette out, she (*)(*)(*)(*)ed herself.

Another person who may be alive if she just did what was lawfully requested of her.

    Oh well.

I agree she didn't cooperate and landed herself in jail. And if she killed herself, I'm not sure how the far left is going to try and blame the police for this one.

This was improper conduct by police officer who escalated a traffic stop into threats, violence and then arrest.

you cannot search someone or arrest them, for being pissed off over getting a ticket and refusing to put out a cigarette.

these are not probable cause or reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.

    the cop screwed up.

now, should the lady have obeyed all of the lawful orders? yes.

was telling her to put out the cigarette a lawful order? no.

ordering her to get out of the car, was.

she should have complied with all of the lawful orders, while continuing to badmouth the cop's lack of professionalism and courtesy, which is her 1st amendment right.

what happened on the ground where the dashcam can't see? who knows.

smoking in your own car, is not a crime.

i can't see how the cops request was proper or even lawful.

A cigarette is considered a weapon when lit - and that's exactly why he asked her to put it out. It's been used before to burn officers. And she didn't comply with his request and she escalated the situation.

    - - - Updated - - -

It' obvious you're talking from a place of no knowledge or training in law enforcement and security detail. No officer would allow for an escalating woman to have a lit cigarette in her hand.

smoking and having an attitude is not reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.

you are allowed to be pissed off about getting a ticket for failure to signal when changing lanes.

Its common knowledge. The police ask you to put it out during a stop for their safety and those around them who may be burned. If you refuse you should fully expect to be tazed.

She wasnt pulled over for that.

I have no problem criticizing police when I see fit. It's not my job to defend them. That's why they have a union and lawyers. I didn't see anything wrong. He can tell her to put out the smoke, and he can remove her from her vehicle for disobeying a lawful order. And he can take her to the ground when she resists. Go ahead and make another martyr out of another misfit. I'm sure she'll get a statue. The Rosa Parks of our time.

No, I'm a state certified field training officer. I train private and hospital security teams and personnel. And I have also worked and trained with police in all manners of arrest, detention, and self defense. I have been attacked with syringes, cigarettes, by drunks, general ETOH suspects, and a plethora of other people. I know what I'm talking about on this issue. A lit cigarette is a weapon, period.

And not that your opinion of me matters an ounce, but for the record - I was certified through the exact FTO program all police officers and even forest rangers and wardens go through. FTO school is FTO school.

the cop asked her a question, did not like the answer so got po'd (did he want her to lie or be honest), then became a jerk and told her to quick smoking as he knew it would upset her more, she has every right to smoke in her car.... especially in this stressful situation

the cop was being a jerk, escalated a situation that did not need to be escalated

Your point ? When a police officer tells you to put out a lit cigarette, you do it. It's not an option. Quit justifying resisting compliance by black suspects. If they don't want to get arrested, stop breaking the law and stop defying legally sanctioned police orders.

No, not when an officer is telling you to put it out for safety. Officers put their lives on the line and this woman is not granted any more privileges just because of her race.

    - - - Updated - - -

You find me the example of an officer stabbing an innocent person with a pen. I'll wait. Meanwhile, look into any public record and you'll see pages of people who were charged with attacking a police officer with items like cigarettes and pens.

    i dont believe you.

i do not believe that is standard practise to ask a motorist to stop smoking.

i think the cop was just being power hungry POS

total bs, he actually made things less safe by being a jerk, he was the safety issue, he was the only thing that day risking everyone's health and in the end, a person died from his actions...

My sister was told to put out her cigarette during a traffic stop. The numbskull threw it out the window. HAHA! Cop was like, you can pick that up now.

Of course it is routine for cops to ask people to put out the smoke.
