Plus it will encourage repatriation of offshore accounts spurring even more investment.

Your logic is breathtaking. Yes the money is Carrier's, but without the tax credits, it is owed to the state. Now you can call it Carrier's money all you want, but it would still go to the state.

"taxes are not something owned by the government but rather money owned by people" Huh? Geez, that is weird reasoning. Taxes are money earned by people but payable to government. It is your money right up to the moment you pay your taxes. Then it isn't yours anymore. If you think the U.S. Treasury is owned by the people, technically you are right but try to make a withdrawal.

In a state budget, if someone is not paying the $7 million dollars, then someone else will. It is as simple as that. It isn't rocket science.

You have four years and perhaps more to get used to that logic. And no, it won't still go to the state if they pack up their bags and leave.

That's not part of your math, of just taking their patents, jobs, and profits, and leaving. It's something your logic doesn't take into account. They can manufacture their stuff anywhere they want, and that is why you are wrong. It is their money, and the government needs to find a way to entice that money and their jobs to stay.

and just how much more will they, and their employees be paying now that so many are staying? If they had left, you would be left with a big fat nought at the end of your faulty math.

This new math is going to be something that you're going to have to understand for awhile now, so get used to it.

I'd be perfectly OK with cutting the corporate rate down to 0% on profits derived from manufacturing in the U.S.

Belch is right, Sandy. Having people working is good for local, state, and federal government. It makes money for them, and it saves them money by not having to give them money for sustenance because their job is gone. Keeping Carrier employees on the job is a win for the employees and for government.

If Carrier is gone to Mexico, so is its money - for workers and for government.

How insignificant is this whole stupid story?

    Labor force: 159,486,000

Carrier jobs in question account for 0.00063% of that.

It's the ideology that matters. Today it's carrier, and tomorrow it's caterpillar.

Yes, but if you were one of the people in that 0.00063%, and it was your family facing the unemployment line this Christmas, I bet you'd be whistling a different tune. Trump said he was going to keep jobs from moving out of the U.S. and guess what? He's not in office yet, and he's begun to do just that. The stupid story is that President Obama couldn't be bothered to pick up a phone and attempt to strike a deal. I'm happy to see Donald Trump taking a whack at the problem...

Do you understand that Carrier will still be paying taxes - just not as much as they were going to if they stood in the US without the "bribe" The 1000 workers at over $25 per hour will still be paying taxes to both fed and state. They will also be contributing over 60 mill to the local economy, they will not be collecting unemployment 26 weeks at $500 per week, collecting food stamps., And this does not include the business that support such a large company, with supplies, out sourcing painting, raw materials etc. This is the state of Indy collecting taxes at the rate of 50 cents on the dollar rather than them leave and collect zero.

No, I wouldn't, because the tune I whistle is not driven by the wind of whatever predicament I happen to be in at the time.

Yet Obama did the same exact thing. Did you get bent out of shape when he did it? I seriously doubt it. Both Democrats and Republicans do this but I never hear anybody complain if it's a Democrat like Obama. Funny how that happens. I don't get why you all are so afraid of Trump that you have to attack him every chance you get. Hillary tried the same thing and lost.

Jobs were saved. It is a win for us. I hope Trump continues saving jobs. Had this been Hillary I would think you people would praise her for it but then again Hillary would never have even tried to save those jobs.

There is another angle to virtually every deal. The US has a ton of (*)(*)(*)(*)ty deals. He won't stand for it when it costs the US jobs, money, security etc. I'm interested to see what kind of deals he continues to make.

Obama hasn't created a single job in his life, well at least a non government related job. His tenure did benefit from entering as president when the job market was at a recent all time low however.

Indiana has 6.597 million people the tax break is $700,000 per year that makes it 10.61 cents per resident per year for 10 years. That is one hell of a good deal. Why don't you Google how much the jobs that the stimulus package cost per job. You will find that Trump is truly an business man compared to community organizer Obama. Do you guys really have that short of a memory or are you truly this dishonest? $875 per job compared to $228,000. Which is a better deal.

If Carrier would close up shop the would pay nothing. Would you rather have 7 million less of something or nothing?

Your logic is truly breath taking if they would have closed up shop and move to Mexico Indiana would have got nothing plus lost jobs. Do you not get it. 7 million less of something is better than nothing. Think it through please. Which is the better deal less taxes payed and jobs or nothing, I think even a liberal should be able to figure this out.

It's also a win for other local businesses.

I truly believe that people are listening too much to a media who's goal was to get Hillary elected. The media doesn't care about the people, all they care about is demonizing Trump because he won over Hillary, even when he does things that are good for the people, good for the country. The people who get their marching orders and just repeat what the media puts out is just a tool to them.

Oh, I didn't feel maligned. I rather enjoyed correcting your false assumption.

I understand the concept of a half a loaf vs. the whole thing. This begs a question regarding the number of jobs that were saved. The media seems to be confused. First I heard 1100 jobs, then I heard 800 jobs. A very timely source yesterday put the total jobs saved at 1069. Then today I heard on Fox it was back to 800. I wonder why there is so much confusion on that figure.

Yes, many times I have heard of municipalities, states, and the federal government using incentives to keep an industry. But this deal is different. Why wasn't a deal worked out with some manufacturing plant in Texas or some other state? We both know the answer to that one. Why is it that a governor who is going to be out of office in days could work out such a deal? Pence will not be responsible for budgeting that $7 million is tax relief. His successor will have to do that. That alone makes the deal smell. There is a lot we don't know about this deal.

One last thing. Probably what made the deal work was Trump's threat to remove the government contracts from Carrier's parent company. The federal government threatening private enterprise is an anathema to conservative principles. That simply isn't done in a conservative government. It is liberals who enjoy interfering in private enterprise. Trump ran as a Republican. Is he rejecting conservative Republican principles in favor of liberal tendencies?

He promised to save and create jobs by reducing taxes on businesses, not threaten businesses. Yes, that requires legislation and that, in turn, requires time and patience. This is a cheap political trick paid for by the citizens of Indiana. There are hundreds of troubling businesses in the U.S. and thousands of jobs at stake. In the grand scheme of things this is little more than a photo op.

It also requires congress, and constitutional authority. That's how they tell it anyway.

    That about sums it up.

Neither of us is going to convince the other of anything, it seems, at this point. Let's wait at least until Obama gets all his baggage out of the White House and Trump takes over before we come to any hard and fast conclusions, shall we...?

You may be right, but you might be interested in what the Wall Street Journal has to say about the Carrier deal. Their editorial board, a reliable bastion of free-market conservatism, isn’t cheering the Carrier deal that Donald Trump is touting as his first major political victory since becoming president-elect.

"The Journal editorial board asserted that Trump’s “real hammer” in the deal was his earlier threat to impose a tariff on the company’s imports if they moved. Overall, staying in the United States when it would operate more competitively in Mexico will only undercut the company’s profitability and its ability to manufacture other goods in the U.S. to export, the board wrote."

"The better strategy is to support him when his policies promote growth and try to block him when he veers into big-government cul-de-sacs,” it concluded. “In that spirit, his Carrier shakedown is a short-term political victory that will hurt workers and the economy if it becomes the norm for the next four years."

There still appears to be some mystery about the number of jobs saved. A Fox news show today stated that 800 jobs were saved. Later Chris Wallace said 1,000 jobs were saved. That is a significant difference and the confusion adds to the assertion that the Trump transition team is hiding something.

Now another Indianapolis manufacturer, Rexnord, wants the same deal as Carrier. Once again, it is interesting that all this is taking place only in Indiana. Pence is the lame duck governor of Indiana. This is not a coincidence.

Will Trump threaten businesses during his administration? He and his staff are touting this as a great political victory. Will threats become the norm? How often will Trump interfere in private enterprise?

Trump saves businesses and jobs. This is nothing new for him. Do you have a problem with him saving jobs? Well get used to it because he is going to keep doing it. I would rather see money spent on this than wasted on broken healthcare etc.

I am not an Obama apologist, but Obama provided incentives to business through legislation passed by Congress. That's a completely different ball game. Trump's deal with Carrier is unique and it violates every conservative principle I know. The Wall Street Journal strongly criticized the deal.

Did he save jobs in the long run? Read my previous post.
