A considerable number of them come places like China or Iran where attempting to emigrate without government approval is a crime. Another considerable number of them are stateless and have no country they can be returned to.

Reading the article you linked it seems that most refugees are looking for a better economic life and fleeing war.
From what I am reading, that camp is closing and true refugees (though how do you know right?) are being separated from the others who are economic "refugees" and Australia is trying to deal with it even offering financial packages to those being sent home.


Australia can end this issue because the scope is much smaller then what you see in Europe. They have a wall of water and they aren't automatically letting boat people in. Deterrents do work.

Europe ends up with growing ghettos and unhappy immigrants living there. They cross borders with expectations that can't be met and end up a huge liability for those countries.

I think the compassionate thing to do is to keep middle eastern citizens in their own countries, dealing with their own issues and helping them there.

Indeed so. A lot of our issues are caused by automation causing loss of jobs. The whole point of automation is so that humans do not have to do the job by themselves. However, in a capitalist society, we need jobs to make money. We've seen a push for more technical and skilled labor, but not everyone can be the world's finest doctor. So yea, we're kinda screwed and blessed at the same time in the near future.
