    I'm okay with the idea of weed smokers having to have a special card and not being able to have both rights at the same time.
    Seems like a decent compromise for both sides.

    (Though the principle of having to choose between one freedom or another still bothers me. In any case, there are all sorts of freedoms that are currently denied, so maybe not so much of an immediate issue with this. And sometimes pragmatic compromises that can avoid problems can be a better idea than no compromise and then eventually extremists getting their way)

    no one is talking about banning hand guns and shotguns, I agree with you that would cause a problem

    not enough demand for machine guns and assault weapons to be that profitable

    if hand guns were banned, would you go out and buy one? many would, how about a machine gun?

    What you call assault rifles are the most popular firearms on America, specifically the Ar 15..
    All firearms should be legal. And you don't have to be stupid to use them like you do drugs that kill you.

    Well, it all comes down to defining what a 'basic right' is, doesn't it?

    People tend to get all Libertarian when it's something they specifically care about.

    You don't see how there's potential for the rights of the majority to triumph over the rights of the minority there?
    Because we're only going to legalize the sorts of things that the majority cares about.

    If hand guns were banned. I'd join the malitia and march on DC armed and I'd expect police to be at my side as we enter the capital to make arrests.

    What are the differences you see in regards to the health of the individual in comparison to alcohol or cigarettes?

    Most agree that none of this stuff is actually "good" for the human body, I have heard of the potential health benefits of say a single glass of red wine for example though. The problem is that people don't consume alcohol or drugs for the health benefits even if based on supposed real medical science. Most people do these things for the effects they give. Although many folks, such as myself, do actually like the taste of a good whiskey I'll admit that I wouldn't sit around and sip it if it didn't have the accompanying buzz to go along with it.

    I can't even agree that weed is closer to the category of cigarettes and alcohol because in my opinion alcohol is in a whole other category all it's own much closer to hard drugs than it is to weed. The only difference is that we as a society have arbitrarily determined that alcohol is "ok" while things like heroin is not.

    Lets take away the current laws and customs and social norms, start with a clean slate, and lay out all of the vices in society coupled with historical evidence of their effects on society. Then step out of the box, with zero preconceived notions about anything at all, and ask which vices should be allowed and which ones should not and even rank them into categories based on detrimental effects to both the individual and society overall.

    Weed would likely be ranked below cigarettes and Jameson Whiskey would be higher than both and could arguably be put in the same category as cocaine. We haven't even mentioned the things that aren't usually thought of during conversations like this such as sugar.

    These laws that govern the use of societal vices are arbitrary based on cultural norms and little else. Once you hit 21 it's literally free for all when it comes to alcohol ranging from Smirnoff to 95% proof Everclear. It's all legal to consume and legal to purchase in virtually unlimited quantities given you have the money to do so. Yet purchasing a bag of marijuana is illegal in most places.

    I mean I'm a rational guy, at least I believe myself so. I can walk into the store around the corner and buy a bottle of something that will literally kill me dead if I drank all of it in one sitting and that's perfectly acceptable and legal in society. I can even buy 5 bottles of Everclear at the same time if I want. Yet I cannot buy a bag of weed, of which I could smoke the whole thing and it WON'T kill me immediately, because the law says I can't.

    Honestly how exactly does that make rational sense?

    Joe is an archaic candidate. He would be more at home in the 80's or 90's.

    In contrast to say an Obama or Trump-he seems quite outdated.

    They haven't yet and they aren't going to. All they're doing there is trying to keep them from competing with bars and liquor stores since that keeps them from getting bank financing. So much for "free" enterprise.
