I'm sure Bernie is aware of the rules, as are all the candidates. It's the voters who are largely in the dark. Almost every state for Super Tuesday is a race for 2nd Place after Bernie, but those 2nd and 3rd place winners cumulatively pick up more delegates than Sanders wins. As candidates drop out, they do not have to release their delegates. If they sign a release, those delegates can vote for whoever they wish. Biden delegates would likely move to Buttigieg and vice versa. California is looking pretty good for Sanders right now. No other candidate is polling to meet the 15% threshold to qualify for delegates, so Sanders has a shot of winning all of CA. Biden and Bloomberg are knocking on the door though to get 15% and pick off a total of half the delegates between them.
Frontrunner, yes. But he's got a tough path to get to the 1991 delegates he needs. He could be the frontrunner in every state. The only number that matters at the end of the day is 1991. Right now, Bernie is well below 50% of the total delegates even though he's "winning".
