how about we just get rid of 'winner takes all' in those states that do this?

This would put us closer to 'one person one vote' without getting rid of the EC.

Then you have no clue what you're talking about as this was Trumps campaign tour for just 2020 with each visit being different locations in 30 states

This was Obama's campaign tour in 2010 which was more than Trumps

    You should get out more

Actually he's not wrong. There was a thread not too long ago about that type of thing. Republicans generally have jobs in the production fields. Such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing etc etc. Democrats tend to hold jobs in the higher tech jobs. Of course what was ironic was that the thread in question was based on an article where the author was deriding on Republicans for being "uneducated". The fool couldn't see the obvious.

Like it or not there is a symbiotic relationship between Republicans and Democrats. If the two were to ever split to the point where we literally have to divide up the country along ideological lines Democrats will be hurt far worse because even just feeding themselves will be a struggle.

No point in trying to defend our constitutional Electoral College against an onslaught by radical Democrats, which I've tried many times before. All I can say is -- if you on the Left want to get rid of the Electoral College, which is the only way that the rest of the nation isn't STEAMROLLED by highly-populated enclaves of your faction -- then GO FOR IT! The procedure for amending the Constitution is well known, and, it's been done already no less than 27 times.

With approximately more than half the U. S. population already receiving one form or another of handout government welfare, or, 'subsidies' (which is, after all, just another word for 'welfare'), you'll never have a better opportunity than right now! :woot:

Well that is what the policy will do if it even gets passed and then if it even gets declared constitutional when about 42 states take it to the Supreme Court.

The fact is this is an attempt to dictate to the states how they will conduct their elections over which they have constitutional plenary power. You can take all the hair on fire hyperbole about Jim Crowe and voting rights under attack and only the Dems can save the country and flush it. This is nothing more than a Dem power grab.

If that is what YOU want in YOUR state then do so, that is entirely up to your state. We don't what that in my state where we already have "one person one vote".

Are you sure that's a good idea?

    Latest Gallup Poll ...

Republicans overtook Democrats as America's preferred political party during the last quarter of 2021, with the GOP holding its largest lead in voter preference since 1995.

Republicans held a 47-42 lead in voter identification at the end of 2021, according to a Gallup Poll released Monday, a dramatic shift from the beginning of the year, when Democrats held a 49-40 edge in the metric.

I have said it before, but the only people who think chucking the EC is a good idea are Democrats who cannot possibly fathom the idea that Republicans can beat them in a straight vote of the people. But they are over confident and shortsighted. Continuing with the report ...

The numbers include both those who affiliate with each party and those who lean towards one of the two parties. Independents remain the largest political group in the U.S., with the percentage of voters who identify as independent continuing to grow in recent years.

So while registered Democrats may a hold a numerical advantage over registered Republicans, it is the Independents whose vote really matters. As amply shown recently in Virginia, Democrats under Biden/Harris are losing the Independents.

Earlier in this thread I told you ...

You would not feel this way if Republicans were the majority party and they were all concentrated in the big cities.

Second, wanting to throw out the EC system belies a common misunderstanding of the intended role of the President. His role was intended to be to carry out the will of Congress and to act as the Commander in Chief in times of war, if Congress voted to go to war.

The center of our politics was intended to be in Congress, not in the Executive Branch or the Judicial Branch. Congress possesses the most power to effect our lives, and so that's where most politics should be played out. The President was given very limited power, and so it made sense to make sure that the President was elected by a broad swath of the country's states, not just a few of the most populous ones. The EC system helps make that happen.

Carping about the EC system is partisan, belies a misunderstanding of how our government is supposed to work, and is stunningly shortsighted. Surely you understand that if we throw out the EC system, a Republican could get the majority of votes and win, but the Democrat would have had the most EC votes and would have won.

The way things are going, unless they turn around, Democrats are going to have to pin their 2024 hopes on winning the EC vote because there is a good chance they won't win the popular vote.

I also said this in a conversation with RodB ...

I disagree. The whole purpose of the Executive Branch is to do what Congress wants them to do, as ordered by the laws Congress passes. The Executive Branch is a effectively the mechanism through which the will of Congress is carried out. The Executive Branch may not break the law (in theory). It must act in accordance to the law, and it is Congress that makes the law. The Executive Branch has very few exclusive powers, and they are minor in nature. A veto can be overridden. Appointments may overruled.

If you decide to hire a construction company to build your house, you are like the Congress deciding what will happen and what it will be like. The construction company is like the Executive Branch, carrying out your will. And just as Congress doesn't concern itself with the technical nuts and bolts of carrying out their will, neither do you necessarily try to tell the framer how to hammer nails or the tell the electrician how to connect wires to power. You trust their expertise in those things. It is much the same relationship. But the bottom line is that you decided to build a house, and the construction company carried out your decision. The construction manager is like the President. He can give orders to the various subcontractors. He can hire and fire them. He has full authority over them, but he is not the boss over you. You are effectively the boss over him, because he has to build your house to your specifications, and it is you that is providing the funding for it.

So let's say the Congress appropriates money to build a new length of interstate freeway in Arizona. The President must spend that money on a new length of freeway in Arizona. He can't spend it on a bridge in Minnesota. The Congress has told the Executive Branch what to do, and the Executive Branch must do it to those specifications.

This is the role of the Executive Branch and to conduct the defense of the nation if called upon to do so.

So I think these people who want to do away with the EC do not understand the role of the Executive Branch. They are looking to exercise power, power that doesn't belong in the Executive Branch. I personally think that that is wrongheaded and potentially dangerous.

I blame Congress for a lot of it because they have willfully and knowingly ceded decision-making to the Executive and Judicial Branches. Why? Because making a decision entails political risk, and careerists are risk-averse. They place their re-election hopes above their duty to make decisions. But just because the Congress is the way it is doesn't mean that we, the People, should approve of it. What we need to do is fix Congress. Our problem is not how we elect a President. Our problem is the Congress.

It would take a constitutional amendment to get rid of the EC. But we would be far better off instituting a constitutional amendment imposing strict term limits on Congress, thereby returning the Congress to the People it is supposed to be serving.

A lot of words to read, but I at least I didn't give you some snarky two-sentence reply.

    Seth

An idea that will never be enacted which would require a constitutional amendment. The individuals in my state vote for the President our state wants, we vote in one voice as citizens of our state. AS INTENDED by the founding fathers and the Constitution and it has served us well since our founding. It works EXACTLY as our government is designed. It is a key part of our country and it's vast area.

The problem with this idea is the Constitution is very explicit about the State Legislatures being the first, last, and only authority as to how their State will select/elect their electors. In fact, they are under no obligation whatsoever (even though all of them do) to even have a vote of the people. They could decide to have themselves vote for the Electors, they could do it based on the weather on Election Day, a coin flip, or literally any means you can think of, and it would be legal and Constitutional. It wouldn't be popular, and it might result in a large number of them being fired by voters, though sadly probably not with the power of incumbency, but it would be completely legit.

And this, my kind sir, is precisely why the left is so strongly in favor of the idea.

Bullshit. Democrats do all they can to create the illusion that they are helping minorities, when all they're doing is buying their votes. They do this mostly in the form of free stuff, free food, free or highly subsidized housing, free cell phones, and on and on and on. And now they want to throw in free internet, daycare, pre-K, and Community College to only increase the amount of free stuff and increase the amount of taxes the productive "class" pays. Next year they'll want more, as they will for every upcoming year, short, medium, and long term. We've thrown away many TRILLIONS of dollars into the problem of poverty and helping minorities, and over a timeline that started well before I was born (I'm 52) and haven't changed or accomplished a thing, other than fooling black voters to vote en masse for Dems because they HAVE done a fantastic job at creating and maintaining that illusion. I will absolutely give them credit for that, even though it's not a good thing.

One other thing, a day or two ago you asked me for evidence that it's trivially easy for any living, breathing human, regardless of who they are or where they are from, to become a registered voter in the US. I provided it, but it seems you are no longer interested in discussing it. Did you realize how right I was and hope nobody noticed it, and what a serious problem we have?

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 fully empowered every American citizen in good-standing to vote -- PERIOD! It was a very noble achievement, and it corrected many wrongs that had existed in this country going back for almost a hundred years, including getting rid of the 'poll tax' and the 'Jim Crow Law' that everyone has heard SO much about lately (as though it were still in effect).

But today's 'woke', radical Democrats want to distort the process of voting in this country to make it possible for NON-CITIZENS and CRIMINALS STILL IN PRISON TO VOTE, and for Democrats to stuff ballot boxes, allow multiple votes by their cronies and stooges, and unconstitutionally FEDERALIZE the entire voting process.

Democrats bitch and complain that it's too much trouble for minorities to have to register to vote, and, even to go through the simple, elementary process of voting. Truth? If anybody, whether a 'minority' or not, can go to the trouble to get signed up for, and engage in all the processes to get government welfare handouts, why the hell can't they do something so simple as VOTING...?!

And when he got there, Trump had another stupid rally for television. Big deal. So it was a very close race so they went to more states than usual, like 15. I want them going everywhere.... And every voter to matter.

Right so every published site confirming the campaign of Obama and Trump are lying because only you know the truth.
Don't make me laugh just because you haven't a clue what you are talking about and got caught not knowing how the EC works.

Trump campaigned at rallies and on Fox noise propaganda blast.... And nobody campaigned in many states. Crummy way to run an election and I know how the electoral college works, another advantage for the GOP.
