I’m just concerned about how an entertainer who’s primary audience is 14 to 16 year old girls is considered to be such an important world figure.

Well, we're Americans, we have a right to decide what's important and clearly a lot of Americans feel like they benefited from Taylor's hard work this year.

    To answer your question.

Trump and swift are both pure entertainers ..

And yes Trump was well know before running for office

he was a well known scum bag

you give Trump way too much credit. He did not create the show called apprentice.

a guy named Mark Burnett created it. Burnett also created others such as survivor and shark tank

Please understand if it weren't her it would be someone else. Because time magazine says something does not make it gospel. Given some of the other people that have appeared as Time's person of the year I'd have give some thought to a defamation lawsuit...

I don't think you fully understand the cultural significance of Taylor Swift.

Her current tour ("Eras Tour") has been the most successful concert tour ever. And it's not even close.

Her tour has raked in over 1 BILLION dollars.

The act in 2nd? Elton John whose "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour brought in 939 million. While that number sounds close to what Swift has done it has to be mentioned that Elton John's tour had 330 play dates, Taylor Swifts has had 60! The average box office for each play date for Swift? About 17 MILLION, the next closest? Beyonce with 10 million.

She has not created world peace or made a world changing scientific discovery but, in her field, she has had one of the most successful years (if not THE most successful) in history.

I don’t really understand how acknowledging TS as a “good person” is an intellectual argument for them being person of the year.

But I guess if you think nobody else did anything more important or interesting than what she’s done which is…dance and sing…*shrugs*

Guess I’m just not cut out to be a celebrity cultist

Sounds like a great argument for her to be concert tour entertainer of the year. Is that what she won?

    Nope.

And, in fact, she did not "win" anything. She was named "Time's person of the year" a decision that belongs strictly with Time Magazine's editorial board. There is no prize associated with it. She did not compete for it, she probably didn't even know she was being considered.

After 2006, I wouldn't be surprised if a potato was person of the year.

I do understand that. I find it very disturbing that we have become a society which worships entertainers. Uninformed and uneducated nit-wits would vote for her if she ran for POTUS.

She’s a freaking pop singer. She’s not helping invent medical breakthroughs which cure diseases. She’s not advancing technologies which save lives or help advance the human condition. She’s not a diplomat negotiations peace agreements across the globe.

She’s a freaking singer who’s primary fan base is girls 13 to 16 years old.

Nah it was just stuff and nonsense. To be sure I could have added the adjective 'self serving' in front of nonsense but why unnecessarily complicate things?

Distinction without a difference to make a bad point to justify ignoring my own, which is that your point is bad.

your point remains bad. What a bummer for you

It’s a reflection of how far our culture has declined. We now put more societal value on a pop singer vs a serious person who has made a valuable contribution to society.

I think Taylor Swift is an exceptional choice to an unexceptional publication. If any conservatives are angry over Taylor Swift being person of the year, I but ask, "Why are you so angry?" To be angry is to implicitly believe that Time broadcasts excellent journalism and that their choice is an indication of a culturally exceptional individual who has contributed to the progress of Western civilization broadly or Americana more specifically. Do these same conservatives read Time and feel properly erudite thereafter? I think Taylor Swift being person of the year is an indication of our cultural rot, which is spot on, since Time is an indication our cultural rot. Once again, an excellent choice. Bravo, Time!

It’s not an issue of being angry. It’s an issue being disturbed by how our society is declining to the point that pop singers are grated as though they are serious contributors to the welfare of mankind.

Celebrity worship has always baffled me. She is a good singer. Those who like her singing get entertainment from it. Why does it need to go beyond that. Baffling.

Musicians being popular and influential isn't a new thing. Hell, actors and game show hosts have become Presidents, so obviously a musician can have influence.

Just another step toward who cares, but,

She's a boss, an artist, and super cute, annoying as this is an exceedingly uncommon combination.

Her battle over her master recordings was epic.

I think her cover is a nice break and I'm sad for DFT supporters that she's beating out their boy Ye.
