Look at the time lines, it took almost 30 years for that to happen. Migration and new generations made that happen. The younger generation was more open to the races and saw the republicans as the party who treated people fairly. People, like republicans who hated high taxes of the north, moved to the south for relief and better job opportunities. This wasn't an "over night" switch, it happened for many reasons. Also, the dems always talk down about southerners, so why would they want to vote democrat anyways?
