AFAIK The Shah's Iran was the first Muslim Country to recognize Israel. Think about how well the relations were between the two countries.

 

Not necessarily - Mohammad Pahlavi was a complete autocratic bastard who suppressed political dissent and abolished the multi party system of governance in favour of a one party system, (and was propped up by the CIA), and I very much doubt they would prefer SAVAK over even the current religious police.

As to the topic in hand; Ahmedinejad has repeatedly referred to the desirabilty of the passing of the Zionist regime in Israel, not once to the destruction of the people of Israel.

Part of why people who take your position lose all credibility is exactly because of completely irrelevant, flippant responses like this one from you. Which is probably why Iran wants to have nuclear weapons. They'd be fools if they did not feel threatened. To strive to get hold of a deterrent would only be logical for them.

They'd be more pacifistic than I am if they didn't. And to be honest - as a pacifist and a staunch opponent of nukes I hate to say it - in some ways the world might be a safer place if they had some.

There's not much political freedom under the Ayatollah either, and what freedom exists doesn't mean much in terms of actual power for the people.

If I have to pick between two dictators, I'd rather go with the one that is slightly more socially progressive than the one who uses religion to hold back social progress.
