Jury finds Alex Jones caused $4 million in damages to two Sandy Hook parents

    Source: CNN Business

"New York (CNN Business)Right-wing talk show host Alex Jones will have to pay the parents of a Sandy Hook shooting victim a little more than $4 million in compensatory damages, a jury decided Thursday, capping a stunning and dramatic case that showcased for the public the real-world harm inflicted by viral conspiracy theories.

The plaintiffs, Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin, had asked for $150 million in compensatory damages to be awarded when the trial started.

A separate, shorter trial during which punitive damages will be discussed is now expected. Punitive damages are awarded when the court finds the defendant's behavior to be especially offensive.

The decision from the jury is a partial ending to a years-long process that began in 2018 when Lewis and Heslin sued Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, which is the parent of the right-wing media organization Infowars. Jones baselessly said in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting, in which 26 people were killed, that the incident was staged. Facing multiple lawsuits, Jones later acknowledged the shooting occurred. He testified in court this week that he now believed it to be "100% real."

But Jones failed to comply with court orders during the discovery process of the lawsuit. His failure to do so led to Heslin and Lewis winning default judgments judgements against Jones. Judge Maya Guerra Gamble ruled in October that Jones was legally responsible for inflicting emotional distress on Heslin and Lewis. Gamble also ruled that Jones was liable for defaming Heslin. The decision to punish Jones in such terms also marks a seismic moment in American society, where the lies and conspiracy theories have flourished in recent years."

    "What Are Punitive Damages?"

"Punitive damages are also called “exemplary damages,” which are damages assessed in the legal process to punish a defendant for negligence. The defendant is usually a company or other large entity. Examples would medical malpractice cases or product liability cases. For instance, say a company sells a product they know to be defective or that can cause injury so they can still profit off it, they could be ordered to pay punitive damages if it is proven they were negligent in their decisions to sell these products.

Individuals can also be ordered to pay punitive damages that injure someone else due to negligent behavior. Examples of this would be drunk driving or distracted driving. In both cases, the defendant would have made a conscious decision to engage in behavior that could easily harm another person. It can even include violating anti-discrimination employment laws in New York City.

Punitive damages are usually imposed to make an example of the negligent party to deter others from behaving in the same fashion or committing similar wrongful behavior. While the intent and purposes of punitive damages imposed on a company are not designed to compensate the plaintiff, they will receive the monetary award. If punitive damages are ordered by a court, they are essentially punishing the defendant, who must pay the amount of money designated and give it to the plaintiff."

Stepping back 7 years in time....

"Donald Trump is heaping praise on a radio host who has asserted that the U.S. government was involved in the Oklahoma City bombing and the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“Your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down,” Trump told Alex Jones
during a Wednesday afternoon appearance on the Infowars.com proprietor’s show.

Jones shared the love, telling Trump that “my audience, 90% of them, they support you.”

Jones, who has advanced a number of conspiracy theories, gained prominence as a 9/11 “truther.”

He has previously asserted on his radio show that there is a “98% chance this was a government-orchestrated controlled bombing."

Trump's dangerous, batshit advisors who he played telephone with daily were Alex Jones, Roger Stone, Jerome Corsi and Ole' Sheriff Joe for starters

    Yep. And dipwad on Fox.

Trump, the "president" who promised not to let Alex Jones down.

The "man" who sat in the seat of leaders of the free world, kissing the butt of a guy who blatantly exploited dead children and their families for profit.

Trump is amoral and lacks all empathy and compassion.
Look at the dictators he admired and considered friends.
He's a sick, sick man who will only get worse.

Oh and look, the DOJ now wants to see Jones' text messages - the two-years worth that his own lawyers sent to the prosecutors LOL!

They are interested in the time around Jan 6th.

With Alex Jones, all 2 years worth should probably be examined.... since... there won't be any problem getting them.....

    Snicker....

I'm not seeing this story about the DOJ though... Are you sure you don't mean the 1/6 Committee?

I just heard it and the 1/6 committee was reported earlier. I can't be 100% sure but I thought I heard the DOJ.

I am certainly hearing that trump WILL be indicted by the DOJ. Legal experts who gave it little to virtually no chance before are now expecting it.

Sandy Hook was a false flag.

Our intelligence services, namely the CIA, MI-6, and Mossad have been running false flags over in Europe for decades; but, they've begun to target the U.S. more and more in the past 30 years.

The '93 WTC Bombing was a FF, so was OKC. They were both more in-line with how the European Operations were carried out under Operation Gladio.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident was a military FF that was exposed as such pretty quickly.

The USS Liberty FF is still the "official story". The families and surviving crew members have never stopped fighting though.

Hopefully the fraud that is known as Sandy Hook will eventually be widely known by the public, but I don't think that is possible until the people take back their country and government from the ruling Establishment.

Until then, 2+2=5 because Big Brother says so.

Jones should be fined the entire worth of his 10 million dollar fortune.

Only in that way can a suitable example be made. Jones doubled and redoubled the already amazing grief these parents were suffering and did it entirely so he could make money off their agony. These people were the victims of a terrible crime Jones and his ilk had a considerable part in enabling. He should have to give it all back to them and more besides.

Additionally, if he had any part in 1/6 he should spend several years in prison.

It's high time some of these Fascist rabble-rousers be made to pay in full for all the suffering they've caused and the damage they've done to a country thousands of 100x better men have died for.

(On to Sucker Snarlson, the Swanson Fortune awaits)

    Wrong…and here’s the important difference.

That link provides EVIDENCE…! Evidence which you blithely sweep aside and instead you attack the messenger….because that’s all you have…

“If you have the facts on your side, hammer the facts. If you have the law on your side, hammer the law. If you have neither the facts nor the law, hammer the table.”

How’s that table of yours holding up…..?

He's stupid because he thinks we're supposed to forget something because he claims it didn't happen. Classic gaslighting.

He'll probably claim that he doesn't remember Jones soon or say there are very fine people on both sides (depending on Jones' last donation amount). /smdh

I read earlier that his ex-wife wants them too.
Most likely she's still battling him in the courts.

I wonder if the Orange Traitor had anything to do with Jones' lawyer "mistakenly" sending his texts to the opposing team.
