    Um.... George Orwell was a democratic socialist.

    He didn't view the Soviet Union or the West particularly favorably, because he was aware of how each supported elitist oligarchies.

    It is true that he was a citizen of the West, but he was far from being a blind supporter of the West.

    Because feudalism in Russia was over by 1862. The system under the Czars was certainly very conservative, but because Russia was hardly the only conservative oriented country (Prussia's 1858 constitution outlawed serfdom as well and the Junkers managed to "nobilize" the middle class as well). It's the fact that in the end Germany made the transition to supporting the workers (The socialist Weimar Republic and not that much but even the Nazis to some extent) while in Russia that didn't happen. That's what Orwell was looking at.

    How would Orwell and his fans seriously expect the Soviet leaders to live like - on a housing estate with the workers? Pretty unlikely in any system, so reality has to be accepted here.

    The leaders may have had nicer houses but they sure didn't own them.

    Its just more false propaganda - appeals to emotion
