It is if you have a fondness for these magnificent creatures.

My house in Australia is near a headland and I would spend hours watching humpbacks and southern right whales on their migration routes. Wonderful animals.

Whales are inteligent creatures, that should be enough.

I was fishing on Monterey Bay with some friends a couple of years ago when a grey whale surfaced nearby and approached us. It seemed curious, as if it had a sense of consciousness. Instinctively we all reached for our guns and shot the dam thing. I'm just kidding, but I like the mental image. :)

Can you disprove their figures? Can you prove that a trained whaling crew accidentally killed an easily identified endangered whale?

Let`s be honest, these anti whaling clowns are sre only trying to short cut the system. Instead of working hard, having a go in life, they`re just big noting themselves the easy way. Publicity seeking losers don`t count for anything.

Australia has one of the worlds largest coastlines and a population of 22 million. Effectively guarding our coastline would mean we would need to spend a staggering amount, despite which we just dont have the available population base necassary.

I see your point. Perhaps in addition to us sending a few thousand of our Marines to guard your northwest coast we could also send our navy to secure your maritime territorial integrity.

Your few thousand marines arent guarding much of anything. There is almost a zero chance of Australia ever being invaded through the north, or invaded at all for that matter.

Yep! That is about all the help you would give us too - even after we have given and given and given aid to the US. Korea, Vietnam, Gulf war, Iraq, Afghanistan......................

All the Aussies have to do is pull a China and capture one of the whaling vessels and hold the sailors hostage for a few weeks, if they really wanted to end the whaling for good.

Australians bastards should mind their own business. Is that penal colony run by whales?

Inhumane to whale? I don't get that. Are you vegetarian? Don't you work at a burger place? Isn't that ironic?

It's not that much. I've had it. It was a part of our school meals too, feeding kids.

Everything is being over-fished. Especially tuna. Can't catch that anymore?

You're becoming even better and better!

    Exactly!

The problem with Japan is its geography. You have a small landmass and a large population. To compound the problem, only about 12% of Japan is arable so they have to import most of their agricultural products, especially animal protein products. There is just no room for large grazing animals like beef for example.

Historically Japan has relied on the ocean to feed its population, fishing. Japan has all but fished out its own territorial waters. Now they are looking further afield for fishing. Japanese longliners have decimated many of the oceanic tuna fields. Large tuna carcasses have been sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars in fish markets in Tokyo, like gold.

Somehow, Japan has found a loophole "allowing" them to hunt whales, for scientific purposes. Most of the meat ends up on the dinner plate. Japan is using Australian Territoral waters to hunt whale or transit through our waters.

Look, I like the Japanese. I have Japanese friends back in Australia, wonderful people. They have been friends to Australia since WWII, our strongest and most reliable trading partner. This is one reason the Australian Govt has taken a relatively light handed approach to Japanese whaling, although the Australian Govt has taken Japan to international courts because of whaling.

But as a human being, I'll totally against whaling in any form, but not forgetting, Australia had a large whaling industry in the 19th-early 20th centuries. All whale products can be found elsewhere so there is no reason for whaling.

Tell your people to get the hell out of our waters and stop slaughtering whales. There is no need for it, and don't give me that 'scientific research' crap.

And yes, Minoru, I do eat meat, but the animals I eat have been killed humanely.

We don't harpoon cows and let them flounder in agony until they die. We don't start gutting them while they are still alive.

And nor do we eat DOGS and CATS and skin them alive. That's what YOUR country does, and its sick.

If they invaded Australian waters, then that is the issue. What they were doing and what they do outside of Australian waters is none of Australia's business.
