Any guitar lovers around here? If you're a musician, particularly a guitar player, and you don't know about this kid, you need to. He's probably the best guitar player in the world right now.

Ya might want to check out some early Eric Clapton when he and Cream were together...

... of course Jimi Hendrix, Electric Ladyland album...

... Eddie van Halen in his younger days...

... Jimmy Page with Led Zepplin, second album...

... Eric Johnson on Cliffs of Dover...

    ... Earl Buchanan...

... Robin Trower, Bridge of Sighs...

    ... Carlos Santana...

    ... Stevie Ray Vaughn..

... and another or two that don't come to mind at the moment, I'll get back atcha...

... but ya got a good list there to start on.

The thing about Satriani is his songs are lifeless. He did raise the bar as far as technical proficiency goes, but Matt is only about 20 years old, and I think he already matched all Satriani's technical skill, and his songs have soul. Satriani's songs have no soul.

Yeah, I already know about all those guys. My dad used to play with Santana.

Out of that list I'd say Hendrix, Stevie Ray and, I guess, Van Halen were the pioneers. Santana and Clapton just sound really good. Clapton was never really an exceptional guitar player, but he can write music, and he is entertaining.

Sorry, waltky, I didn't mean to just shut you down. I just posted the first thought that came to mind. Ignore it.

He's an excellent guitarist, no doubt about that. But, he's by no means the best in the world, not by a long shot. There's a pile of guitarist, larger than Everest, who're already considered amongst the best in the world, and they're all better than this guy.

In discussions such as these, I always like to highlight this chick, just to put things in perspective.

Now, this is highly subjective, of course. She's awesome. I'm not sure she's better though, certainly not by a long shot. Who are you thinking of who's better by a long shot.

Is cool - no offense taken...

... about ten years ago there was a 10 year old kid in Australia...

... who's dad taught him to play blues lead...

... anybody know whatever became of him?

He'd be around 20 by now.

And there was also this young guitarist who was discovered by a rock n' roll photographer...

... who was gettin' ready to retire about 5 years ago who got him an interview with a music producer...

... anybody know what became of him?

Might see if you can find a Louisville Ky. guitarist...

... named Eric Smalley on the internet...

... he's pretty good last I heard about 15 years ago...

... but don't know what he's doin' now.

I play guitar. I used to play electric more, but now I stick with my acoustic. My favorite guitarists are not necessarily the fastest (although Dave Mustaine is fast and interesting) but their music evokes an emotional response.

    Jimmy Hendrix
    Lindsay Buckingham
    Clapton
    Beck
    Slash
Steve Vai--his (*)(*)(*)(*) for that Crossroads movie was TIGHT
    Dave Mustaine
    and my favorite:

Jimmy Page not necessarily for the hard stuff, but this:

On second thought, I think she may be better.

    This song is better.

I have a Guild D-50 with built-in factory Fishman pick-ups I am willing to let go at a steal if anyone's interested. Almost MINT.

Comes with Classic hardshell case built for Guild.

    Nice.

I have a 1968 Gibson Les Paul that my brother is currently using, a hollow body Rick, and a Takamine.

Cool. I have the same Galvador Ibanez I've had since I lost my first classical guitar that I had from the time I was a baby, up until some time in my late twenties. Now I can't remember what happened to it. I went through a lot of electric guitars in my early twenties including one Strat. I used to want a Les Paul, but I'm not really into them any more. My little brother has a Les Paul. And you have a 68. Why am I not surprised?

Vai suffers from the same disease Satriani suffers from, Soullesnes.

Guess it's all about technical ability, then?

You know you're right that was good music in Crossroads. Who was the other guitar player again?

He's definitely a very good guitar player. He and Satriani were the first to get to that level. But now all the kids can just soak all that up when they're young, and then build on it. For some people, yeah, I guess it's all about skill, but do you really like to listen to something that's just nothing but skill? There is more to it than that, no?

Who did the playing? I forget, but he was amazing, too! I may need to rewatch it.

No, no...it was my guitar teacher and I would just come by to listen to him play. Old men like to have people listen to them. :) I liked to listen.

    Yeah...

    You're right about that...

I predominantly listen to hip hop, and, as much as I love to hear a ridiculously skilled lyricist, I usually need something else...
