What in the OP? Some Frenchi named Matt Rach. Yeah, I had to listen to it a whole bunch of times when I first got it. It made me get my guitar back out, and I stayed up all night.

    Here's another very gorgeous one.

I really like this and you are right. Sometimes you will hear a song and it makes you want to pick up the guitar again or sing...play out, whatever. Lately, it's been all of you guys who sort of helped me get my mojo back. Totally serious. Now, I've been practicing again and singing and intend to go to open mike night.

I don't really listen to hip hop. You know what's a good song, though? Young Bleed, The Day They Made Me Boss.

First of all, I just want to say to all the non-guitar players who say Jimmy Page is sloppy --(*)(*)(*)(*) you. You just heard that from someone and are repeating it. The man is a guitar GOD and here is why:

Try doing this on any guitar. I dare you to say it's easy.

Not sure what the 'dislike' was for lol - Joe Satriani is better than any of them listed up there, including Slash and Eddie Van Halen.

Really? Here's three of my favorite Vai songs. Chock full o' soul, with mind boggling technical skill to boot!

I've heard this one umpteen times, and it still gives me goose flesh.

Here's a nice blues/rock piece. Again, I get more from than a display of technical ability from it.

I love this one, practically transcendental. :)

    He's pretty good.

FYI, don't click 'like' when watching a video. It refreshes the page.

I do wish that EVH would have focused on going solo at some point though.

Eddie's always going off track. His solos don't have anything to do with the song. They all have to adjust and reset One to wherever he happens to end up. And when he gets there he's on the wrong note. Dimebag Darrell was a huge improvement over Van Halen.

I also play the guitar, but not up to the standard of these (some of my favorite guitar players, in various ways):

(solo starting about 5:50, of you don't want to go through the whole song - possibly the greatest guitar player that's ever walked the earth, in my humble opinion):

(if we are talking technical precision and musicality in that sense and in a heavy context, this is absolutely the way to do it!):

(just an incredible accoustic player, without being flashy about it)

(anybody remember this guy - absolutely superb, and hugely underrated!)

I agree with some of the comments about some of the technically best guitarists being 'soulless'. I can't remember who said it, but the quote was something along the lines of 'being a great guitarist is not about how fast you can play, but how slow you can play', and it's very true.

By way of contrast (with the last one in particular, for obvious reasons!), this is one of the worst and most uninteresting guitar solos it has even been my misfortune to witness. Be prepared - it is fast, and interminably dull!):

Ozzy managed to get sacked from a band with a guitar genius, find another one, lose him in a plane crash, replace him with yet another, and the sack him to hire that idiot!

ETA - At least he's seen sense now, and replaced him with someone vastly superior!

I think Zakk is seriously overrated. I've never really understood what all the fuss was about. I respect his technical ability, but his sound doesn't do much for me. In fact, I was literally pissed off when I heard his alleged tribute to dime.

I mean... this song is okay, I like it, but it just turns to bull(*)(*)(*)(*) @ 3:12. Really Zakk?! You couldn't be more creative than that? PSH! And another thing... I get so sick of his pinch harmonic/vibrato thing... enough already!

I'm glad it's not just me!

Here's another seriously underrated guitar player of the melodic type - this guy, Steve Rothery of Marillion, could fart classic tunes without even realising it! The guitar solo at the end (from about 15:25 on) is just a masterpiece of dramatic yet understated melodic, tuneful playing:

There's so much passion with him - every note is felt, and every note is meant, and you can tell. He's also relatively lacking in some of the typical guitarist ego traits - some of his best solos have always been performed almost fitting into the 'background', underneath the singing and other stuff - that's quite unusual. Apparently he's also a really nice, genuine guy too. Here's some more of his solos:

And some more recent video of him playing:

I know it's almost sacreligious in the modern world to say this, but I don't see what the great fuss is about him either. It's OK, but I can't see the great unique genius or earth-shattering originality that seems to be ascibed to him as a matter of routine.

    Almost fergot...

... Steve Vai was pretty good in the movie Crossroads...

... think Ry Cooder did the guitar work for Ralph Macchio...

... oh yeah, and Alan Parsons too...

... also, don't be afraid to use yer innate connections...

... if your dad played with Santana...

... consider gettin' with some of the other kids who play...

... like the kids of Crosby, Stills & Nash are doing...

    ... wish ya luck.
