Charlotte, Tulsa, Sandy Hook, Columbine. The list is endless. Are Americans (including the police) emotionally fit to bear arms?
No, no one is, not really. Most people can still carry it off, but once the society is as widely armed as we are there is a whole plethora of dynamics that comes to the fore which very few human beings of any sort could deal with on any regular basis. (Are they armed or not? is that a gun or what, etc, etc,) We recognize this in combat zones and we try to rotate soldiers in and out so nobody stays on combat alert for more than a few weeks, our police OTOH are put in this situation day after day for YEARS on end, it's a wonder that so very few break as actually do, and this applies to civilians as well. We are putting ourselves in a war zone, and we're all going crazy as a result. Thanks "good guys", thanks NRA. Your childish toys are outrageously expensive in treasure and irreplaceable lives, it's time we adults stepped in and stopped all this dangerous play, IMO
I think the way in which the question is presented, is quite loaded and ignores something critically important to the discussion... all the americans who own weapons and never harm anyone... we never seem to have the discussion about the rural areas and their higher rate of gun ownership than urban centers, yet we have the complete opposite in crime stats, the rural areas sometimes go decades without a single murder, and per capita rates demonstrate the immensely low rate compared to urban centers that often have a double digit multiple of the crime and rates of gun crimes specifically as the rural areas... I think the more important question, are people attracted to large urban centers, more prone to violence, as a result of the very factors that encourage them to move to those urban centers... essentially, are the sane people capable of self-control more apt to move to rural areas while the more impulsive and less apt to self-control more likely to move to urban centers where they propagate their mental instabilities... I think its an interesting discussion to have... the type of city you're drawn to, very well might be a better judgement on if you're "emotionally fit to bear arms" as you suggest... we can almost replicate this to other countries as well, those who are drawn to the larger cities, have a higher rate of violence, when we remove the most deadly weapon of choice, they express that violence in other ways, stabbings, battery, etc etc... so while the end result may be less likely to result in death, the rate of violence remains high compared to those who prefer to live in a more rural area...
As usual for anti-gunners, people have adverted being victims by firearms are absolutely irrelevant to the OPer. There has never been a victim of a mass shooting who was armed. The statistical way to be certain to not be shot in a mass shooting it to be armed. So the real question is are most adult Americans foolish and naive for not being armed?
After Pulse my wife came to me after 10 years of being together and said I want you to buy me a gun and teach me how to shoot it. My wife is educated, professional, and highly progressive. ( journalist ) She is kind and thoughtful. Many Americans are much like her. She is exactly the kind of person you want standing next to you with a wheel gun in her purse if something goes bad Good too see the far left attack dogs are already in here espousing their political agendas with their heads stuck in the sand. Maybe it will be my wife who saves your life one day So yes Americans are ready IMO
Yet for all the violence reported in a country of 325 million people, the objective will be able to understand that the exception does not make the rule. Most gun owners are responsible gun owners. This is not to downplay the issue, but to counter the OP's biased either/or poll.
I agree and the OP is part of a very dangerous narrative, and that is to paint their political opposition as crazy, clinically crazy. Then Big Daddy State has a legal basis for confiscation of firearms based on whatever psychobabble label they choose to paint people with.
Your assumption that law abiding citizens owning/carrying guns constitutes 'combat zones' is unsupported. Where I live most folks own LEGAL guns and even legally carry and it is one of the safest places I have ever lived.
if you ban guns, only criminals have guns and you make criminals of those that own but do not abuse guns .
And in every single such instance, there was underlying evidence of the perpetrator suffering from mental illness, yet no one did anything about it. None of those who were aware of the evidence of mental illness did anything that could have prevented these incidents from occurring. They chose to ignore the problem. If we are discussing the population of the united states as a whole, then we must discuss the population of every nation as a whole.
Woah woah now, the mentally ill commit an identical rate of crime to that of the black population by rate. That's not a good enough reason.
I think so, they are, outpouring emotions through fistfights can be another option, not always with a gun and is more manly.
Well, for the Anti Gun folks here, the people committing the crimes are a tiny fraction of the population committing most of the crime, more people have guns than ever before and concealed carry is growing exponentially, more people carry than ever before.
For every gun used to commit murder yesterday, >16,000,000 were not. This answers your question, in full. - - - Updated - - - Unsupportable nonsense.
I'd say most americans are just fine owning a gun. The problem is we need to stop attacking law abiding citizens and get on with attacking those who abuse the privilege of owning a firearm . Besides, there are over 300million guns in circulation in the USA at the moment, and I am not trying to say it is no big deal but only 30k people a year are killed by them with the great majority being suicides rather than murder or accidental. The way anti gun nuts talk you would think we are just like some 3rd world muslim country or north africa.
My view is that its okay to let the population be armed as long as the population is sufficiently moral and responsible. Back in the days, the american people were responsible enough. But today I'd say no, they're not responsible enough. Atleast certain segments are lacking. Thus I think gun rights should be restricted. Parts of american culture has somewhat degenerated in the recent decades, and these are not fit to bear arms.
Americans generally reject the premise that you can and should judge a nation based on a small minority - in this case, a tiny miniscule minority of less than 1/100,000. The whole idea of judging a nation like that is a fascist concept.
I've yet to find an article, news report or statistic, that had someone saying 'Gee, I have a gun, lets go commit a crime'. The urge to commit a crime exists long before possession of a gun. If they couldn't lay their hands on one, I'm sure they would find another useful object to use. And that slope isn't just slippery, it's greased to the max.
