What would an America look like with Atheists in charge of all aspects of Government...and perhaps Society.

Here's your chance guys. What would be your Program?

If this isn't just a flamebaiting thread in disguise, I could see these things changing:

-No more focus on abortion or Planned Parenthood.
-Less money being funneled into the military.
    - Same-sex marriage wouldn't be a big issue.
    - Socialism wouldn't be a frightening word to the American people and we would probably have more focus on collective solutions to education and health care.

These are just some things off the top of my head. All in all, America would be far more like a European country do to most atheists being liberal leaning.

Well I am not an atheist, but I am not a Christian either. I think an atheist, who does not look at the world through a "religious" filter, may be a bit more balanced in their choices when it came to legislation. If all of us were Christian, then having a society that runs off of Christian values would be just fine... but we are not all Christian. The USA was founded on the idea of freedom for the individual. Our forefathers escaped from am oppressive monotheistic ruler when they jumped on ships and set sail for the New World. In America, the minority are protected from the majority. I really love that about America. Most Americans are Christian... but I as a non Christian am protected from being made to live by the Bible... or any other religious text. We the people have the right to be religious or not, and our laws should reflect this.

Thank God those who created America included the separation of Church and State.

I had no intent on flaming you in this topic. I just really wanted to see how you may have thought this out, what you would put into place and how realistic it would be. But above all, your capacity for tolerance.

No more focus on abortion or pp. How do you think you can do that? People have strong opinions either way. How will you shut down those that will not be silenced on the matter of abortion or planned parenthood. Same for homosexual marriage. How would you make it a non-issue. especially when people strongly do not approve. And the term socialism. Americans don't want it. What again, will you do to make it less frightening. Americans will not take kindly to be told to 'not focus on abortion, homosexual lifestyle or socialism'.

Probably about the same. The Constitution is the law of the land, which protects both the religious and non religious.

So as the chief atheist in charge, sitting in the WH with exectutive order power you would do nothing about....say....people celebrating christmas? What about the Ten Commandments that sit in some courthouses? What about the monuments and christian themes on buildings and other venues? What about weekly addresses for reason from your citizens. Nothing?

Such topics are not my forte. true. It was for curiosity based on the number of topics blaspheming christianity/God/Christ and insulting persons who do hold those beliefs. If you would do nothing then Why The HELL do we have to submit ourselves to these hourly harangues by some of you guys?

Once again, the law of the land is the US Constitution. According to it religion and government mixing are not too kosher, second mocking pun intended. If you have a problem with that then move to a theocratic nation.

Nobody is making you come to this forum. You do so of your own free will. If you would rather hear people preach about the goodness of Jesus and God there are plenty of Christian forums to join.

LoL. this is a scary thing. i know. You don't really feel it's safe to say what you'd do. I know you guys would do more than you are saying. I don't think you're being honest and i think that your strategy of attacking moi only serves, you think, as a distraction from ...(however badly you say i formed it) the question. You know very well what i was asking. I can understand your hesitation in answering it. The only honest person was the first person who stated what he'd do.

I wasn't attacking you, I was making a statement. You dislike seeing people bashing on and attacking Christianity, if that is so then you are more than welcome to leave and go somewhere that supports your viewpoint 24/7. I sometimes visit forums where I don't have to bicker and argue with people who disagree with me. It's a perfectly normal thing to do, stress relieving as well.

I guess this is my answer to the question; Most atheists are Democrats and very liberal, sometimes too liberal for me. I am afraid we'd see a very big government and more spending if only Democrats/liberals ran the government. But then again the Republicans/conservatives are not doing a much better job of stopping spending either. The only answer is that we go back to the roots of our Constitution and dump all the wasteful spending and programs. The answer is Libertarianism and Constitutionalism if you ask me.

They had the system that you love under the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union. They tossed it into the trash can because they wanted a better system. You won't get what you want under their replacement system.

The first thing is to make it through today.

Matthew 6:34 (NLT) = So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Let me play devils advocate here. First off I am antiabortion unless the life of the mother is at risk, also in rape or incest cases. I am for equal rights of gay couples, and I am not a fan of Socialism. But with that said I now slip into devils advocate mode.

Our laws on abortion and gay rights should not be based upon the Bible or Christian ideals. Why? This is America and there is a separation of Church and State. The Church cannot be allowed to rule the State directly or indirectly... even in a Country with a Christian majority. Any law that governs abortion and or gay rights has to be weighed against the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Cut and dry right? Not at all. For just as laws should not be based upon Christian ideals, how can they not be when so many Americans deeply believe in those ideals? A question that I just do not have the answer to.

I would hate to be a politician. For no matter what position you take on just about any issue... there will always be those who hate you for it.

That is your choice. You choose to come to an open forum. Take responsibility for your own actions.

This is probably more true than people realize.
Even the devout babble that many politicians use is most likely simply a political tool to appeal to the masses.
Not much would change, as the question wasn't what would an atheist country look like, but rather what would our current system look like with atheists in charge.
Not much different, although we would probably waste alot less time arguing issues that are purely based on religious bias, like gay marriage. Rights would be far less contested as Jefferson's idea that your rights end at the tip of my nose and that you have the right to anything that doesn't rob my purse or break my leg would be less confused by theistic notions.
The COTUS would be easier to follow without leaders pursuing religious ends.

I don't think atheism has anything to do with a persons qualifications for being in a position of authority. It simply means a lack of belief in a diety. I don't see any rational coralaries to that.

Since when are Christmas trees exclusive to cults? Which "cults" - most notable Christian cults actually were against the celebration of Christmas. I don't think I've heard a dumber statement than that, unless you're not from the US.

Christians made it something interesting, the pagan version was obviously so bland that it didn't catch on - kind of like when Shakespare ursurped the the story of Romeo and Juliet from an ancient Roman fable, just look at how much more timeless and widely recognized his version was. :)

Everybody would (*)(*)(*)(*) rainbows and (*)(*)(*)(*) chocolate ice cream.

and we'd be free from magic worshiping zealots that think they know everything even though they can't make any sense of simple evidence.
