I would seriously like to know why these boat people who have engaged in illegal criminal activity by hiring people smugglers to illegally smuggle into Australia deserve the empathy and support they are getting - especially form the tax payers purse?

What support are the other refugee's getting in refugee camps for NOT engaging in illegal activity, and not hiring people smugglers to bring them here?

The Governments own reports state, that over 85% of these boat people arrivals are still on some form of Australian tax payer supported welfare even after them being here for more than 5 years.

The Australian Government has now also recognised that many of these so-called boat people have been living in Indonesia for sometimes "years" before they attempt to make their way to Australia.

So, therefore their claims about fleeing rape, murder, and other direct hostile activity directly related to the acceptance an asylum seeker is a load of garbage, considering they have been residing in Indonesia and Malaysia.

There is NO DOUBT in my mind that these people arriving by boat are NOT genuine refugees, and they are simply country shoppers for a better life that has nothing to do with safety, and its time to stop them and bring in the true genuine refugees waiting patiently in the camps.

Asylum seekers who arrive by boat are subject to the same assessment criteria as all other asylum applicants. Past figures show that between 70 and 97 per cent of asylum seekers arriving by boat at different times have been found to be refugees and granted protection either in Australia or in another country. For example:

    • according to the Refugee Council of Australia, in 1998–99, approximately 97 per cent of Iraqi and 92 per cent of Afghan applicants (the majority of whom would have arrived by boat) were granted refugee status and given permanent protection visas

    • under the ‘Pacific Solution’ a total of 1637 unauthorised arrivals were detained in the Nauru and Manus facilities between September 2001 and February 2008. Of those, 1153 (70 per cent) were found to be refugees and ultimately resettled to Australia or other countries

    • during the Rudd Government approximately 90–95 per cent of assessments completed on Christmas Island resulted in protection visas being granted. For example, of the 1254 claims assessed on Christmas Island between 1 July 2009 and 31 January 2010, only 110 people were assessed as not being refugees. These figures suggest that 1144 (approximately 91 per cent) of those claims were successful.

    Really, "no doubt"?

"Asylum seekers who arrive by boat are more likely to be accepted as genuine refugees than those who arrive by plane, a Parliament document says."

    http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1295782/asylum-seekers-where-australia-stands

"Ms Phillips says those who arrive by boat, in any country, are more likely to be accepted as genuine refugees than those who fly.

"Of the boat arrivals, past figures showed between 70 and 97 per cent were later found to be genuine refugees.

"The majority arriving by plane were not found to be refugees, the report said."

They are criminals who hired people smugglers to smuggle them into my country, so why should they be given any empathy, help & precedence over other refugees waiting in refugee camps?

Over 90% of boat people are deemed to be genuine refugees.
    You lose.

"Under Australian Law and International Law a person is entitled to make an application for refugee asylum in another country when they allege they are escaping persecution. Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that 'Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.'

"People who arrive on our shores without prior authorisation from Australia, with no documents, or false documents are not illegal. They are asylum seekers - a legal status under International Law. Many Asylum Seekers are forced to leave their countries in haste and are unable to access appropriate documentation. In many cases oppressive authorities actively prevent normal migration processes from occurring. 'Illegals' are people who overstay their visas. The vast majority of these in Australia are from western countries, including 5,000 British tourists."

So individuals (boat people) who illegally hire criminals (people smugglers) in the country they are residing to smuggle them into another country (Australia) for $10,000 per ticket are not criminals, or have not engaged in criminal activity?

Why do you think over 85% of these boat people arrivals are still sucking on the tax payer welfare tit after being here for over 5 years?

These boat people are fleeing from Indonesia. Therefore, they are being persecuted in Indonesia. So, why are Australian politicians giving these “crooked” “tin-pot” Indonesian Governments who don’t protect the rights of refugees $500 million of Australian tax payers dollars free every year?

Why the hell did these idiotic Australian politicians give the Indonesians $200 million of tax payers money to build Muslim schools, if these people don’t give a (*)(*)(*)(*) about human refugee rights?

The buck has to stop somewhere, so why does it always have to be here in Australia?

Why carn’t the buck stop with Indonesia, or Malaysia for a change??

Paying people smugglers does not disqualify someone from claiming asylum seeker status.

its important to weed out the ones that are criminals escaping justice in their own countries with those that are truly seeking freedom from a corrupt government!

Asylum seekers are not committing a crime. The people smugglers are but I don't care as those people smgglers are saving lives.

90% of those who come here are genuine refugees and those who aren't are sent home.

It takes time, but the government is able to figure these things out. I am not sure of the exact process.

If my cat went to the toilet on my front step, if given enough time, money and resources, I too, just like all the do-gooders, politicians and their flunkies could also come up with every excuse imaginable as to reasons “why” my cat used my front step as a toilet.

But, all those reasons and all those excuses doesn’t negate the ‘facts’ that my cat DID use my front step as a toilet.

Just like the facts that: these middle eastern boat people have travelled through 7 other countries to get to Australia; they engaged in criminal activity by hire criminal people smugglers to smuggle them into Australia; they sometimes live in Malaysia & Indonesia for long periods before coming to Australia - country shopping for Australia’s easy welfare & housing systems.

Put a stop to the immediate welfare and housing system upon their detention release and see how many come? Make it a 3 years mandatory wait, and see what happens - no more boat people!!

Some of you people simply wouldn’t wake up if a shyte house fell on your head!!
Don’t use these people to make up for all the nasty and bad things you have done in your life, so don’t be such cowards, and find repentance some other way…

Culldav, you have been shown the facts twice already, if you refuse to believe them, that is your problem, not mine.

there was a boat full of people from Indonesia that landed in British Columbia a few years back......after several months of investigations it was found that less than half were true refugees.....the rest were just trying to escape poverty. Although there is nothing wrong with that, there are proper channels to go throuh immigration.....otherwise wealthy countries would get swamped with people trying to better their lives at the expense of the rest of us here!

Where are you getting that information from?

I'd like to have a look at those figures.

about 5 or 6 years ago I think.....there is nothing wrong with wanting a better life but thats what immigration is for, you go through the process and some get approved while others dont, otherwise we get swamped with people and that sacrifices our own jobs!

Asylum seekers are going through the "proper channels" for immigration.

It's all part of the system and all perfectly legal.

"'In countries with discrete refugee assessment procedures, an asylum seeker is someone whose claim for protection has not been decided by the country in which she or he has submitted their claim. Not every asylum seeker will ultimately be recognised as a refugee, but every refugee is initially an asylum seeker.' "

I don't know how many documentaries have been shown advocating that the boat people are told if they want to stay in Australia permanently they have to chuck their documentation away and make it as hard as possible for the Australian authorities to identify you, which would make sense.

No paperwork or documentation you could get away with telling the Aussies any old story - couldn't you. Including you are a really goat herder or dirt farmer, but pretending you are someone else and being chased though 7 different countries by your countries military police for god know what reason or lie. I don't why or how the Aussie authorities keep buying the baby excuse, and letting these obvious country shoppers in, while other genuine refugees rot in camps.

in canada its called someone claiming refugee status. They try to become citizens under refugee status and ask for acceptance for compassionate reasons.......but not too many can prove what they claim. How many ultimately get accepted I am not sure....but too many in my opinion!
