They are not appointed. council and parliament vote on who will be commissioner and who will be sitting in the commission.
3 proposed commissioners were voted down in parliament. Von der Leyen was voted in by the council and than had to face a vote in parliament.

I agree with you that proportional elections are generally believed to be more democratic. The Brexit Referendum was particularly difficult as it was 'direct democracy' albeit an advisory level within a Government which is Representative Democracy. It would be difficult for one not to be misused. However we do remain at the moment a Representative Democracy despite the referendum and that is the democracy the hard Brexiters wish to destroy.

You are not very good at reading are you? Your argument has nothing to do with anything I said.

And -Why are you shouting at me? Scotland had their referendum, their choice, not mine, and our pensions have gone to the EU darlin' Blair plundered the pot as did Heath before him admittedly Gov has not been very good at topping it up since but I am not here to defend any gov. We had enough in our pension pot before the EU for 100 years - all gone. Though Scotland does get a far far larger bite of the pot than any other part of the EU - misspent by the SNP.

I do not possess a gun.

The EU save the Planet? Loooooooooooooool

Parliament can void those up for appointment. They are appointed.

Bercow does yes but not by right. He has broken all of the rule to thwart Brexit - he took the order paper from Gov and gave it to the opposition against all convention. There is no way to get rid of Bercow but he is now formally under scrutiny for historical claims of harassment, sexual harassment and bullying -He will not become a Lord as retired speakers usually are. He is a bully and a vandal - the most hated person in Britain at the moment.

Luckily the Dept Speaker will be in the chair tomorrow.

You do not get it, the President of the commission, gets voted in by council and parliament.
The President, than presents his or her cabinet, the commissioners/ministers.
They than have to face hearings in the parliament and are voted on.
Parliament decides, similar to the process in the US, who will be a commissioner, in the cabinet of the President of the Commission.

They are appointed but people have a vote to void any given appointee before they are sworn in.

It is nothing like representative democracy - once in they cannot be removed - they are a law unto themselves and all the Corporates whose posh offices surround the EU buildings in Brussels.

They are ministers, members of the cabinet, same as in the UK or the US. Neither in the US or UK do the people vote on who is sitting in the cabinet.
The cabinet is appointed by the President or the PM.
If that is ok in the UK or the US, why is it wrong in the EU ?
Every single commissioner faces confirmation hearings, like in the US and than gets a up or down vote.
3 of Leyen's failed the test in Parliament, the democratic test and Leyen has to present 3 new proposals, who than have to face hearings again and a up or down vote, by the representatives of the people called EMPs.

You are simply proving my point. They are appointed - MEPs do now have a little bit of a say but only as a veto not as an implementation.

The leavers have been straining for three years, and are still sitting on the pot.

It's time that the public to be given the opportunity to vote on a detailed proposal, not like that now out-of-date, non-specific and obviously unworkable one.

Me baiting? All you have done is insult me whilst I am here discussing what is happening in my own country - from the pov of a Brexiteer.

Is that a threat alexa? That I point out a post of yours was not worthy of a comment, which it was not, you will throw me off this site - or is it because you dislike what I say out of your own prejudice against the English.

It has been turned down by Parliament twice --- Your Remoaners will get Bercow to break his own precedent, even though he used Erskine May falsely, and try again though I am sure.

Perhaps others who are more knowledgeable would care to comment on an observation.

To get the EU to accept yet another extension to Brexit there has to be a unanimous vote from all 28 leaders, and Boris Johnson is one of those leaders.
So; is he allowed to vote, and if so will his vote of "no" stop the granting of any extension?

No Boris can't veto our extension if one is put to the vote - It would be up to the other 27 countries. Tusk said today that it will not be them ( Council) which pushes us into a no-deal.

As far as I can tell Boris is still a member of the European Council and as such still has voting rights on all issues presented to the council.
The treaty of Lisbon makes no mention of a council member being denied a vote.

He has no vote on this matter - that has been stated many times.

The rule is probably in the the TFEU - The Lisbon Treaty isn't very helpful over functioning details, is it? .

I don't think so - The Remoaner traitors have lost the backing of the EU - the EU is behind Boris now and wants this deal done and dusted asap.

That the 1st vote would pass with such a large majority was unexpected - a win was not, such a large win was. That the 2nd vote would not go through was anticipated.

And Right Wing? Wtf is that all about --- most Leave voters are working class, solid Labour voters - or were. There is nothing RW about Brexit.

Exactly as any appointee from the President of the US. He/She can only be fired by the President.

I have no idea how it works in the UK. Do the appointed ministers of the PM have to go through a hearing process and vote by MPs before they can take their position in the cabinet ? And can they be fired by parliament ?
