Here's what Dems do to keep the natives restless... keep raising the poverty line, so more and more people can be considered poor.

As of today, a person can make $1100 a month and qualify for food stamps when real poverty is closer to $500 a month.

    It's all an illusion.

people have shown how they can live on 14k a year. it's very basic living, no frills, but it can be done.

Comfort levels and livable wage are two completely separate issues. if a person chooses to divert money that could be used for food or necessities for iphones..... or buy 100$ nike instead of 10$ shoes from walmart..... you lose the right to complain about not having enough money to eat.

Oh please. You were just trying to be rude. If I'm not sure of a poster's gender, then I say "he/she" or "the poster." My gender is clearly stated to be female on my profile page. You were TRYING to be rude, and now you are trying to make this personal. I'm not a newbie to political forums. I know how you people operate. Now, stick to the topic, and the next time you refer to a poster, you should take my advice above, unless you want to be referred to as a "she." K?

Now, it doesn't matter what YOU did. Got that? Your life is not the same as another person's life. Some people have more complicated issues.

Also, just because a person had a child or children, that does not mean they DESERVE to live a life in poverty. People make mistakes and people are not perfect either.

This isn't just about "burger flippers" either. I don't even think most burger flipping jobs are full-time jobs. Those are part-time positions, in most instances, I believe, unless you are in management.

Anyways, regardless, we NEED those people too. Everyone has some value, so quit making it sound as if you are more valuable than anyone else . . . because you are NOT. Perhaps you should work for minimum wage too?

The bottom line here is if you are a good employee, and you work full-time, you should be able to pay your damn bills. If not, there is a HUGE problem, and of course there is a huge problem.

well, sorry, I didn't get your unwritten rule book on e-etiquite. here's my not concerned face...

    :/

opportunity is always there in America. if you choose not to take advantage /= you not having the opportunity.

I had the opportunity to take the trainings to become principal.... I passed. I can't complain that principals make more than me because I chose to remain teaching.

a burger flipper can't be upset he didn't get the promotion that another one did, if he's been a bad worker up to that point.

you can't complain that you can't raise a family on min wage when you chose to have a family, with a skill set that only commanded minimum wage. Your economic value to your employer doesn't magically increase because you spit out 3 kids due to poor life choices.

I remember back to Wendy's again.... my 2nd year of college, I was working at Wendy's and paying my college tuition (due in January) Business was slow during winters, so hours were scarce.... so I begged for hours. If they needed help, or someone called out, I volunteered to stay and NEVER volunteered to go home early

We had two 18 yo single mothers. They would demand the hours, too. But the difference was, they would never volunteer to stay later. They ALWAYS ASKED. all 3 would be scheduled 11-2, and they would ask for someone to stay til 5.... you could bank on it. But they always asked the girls first. At first, I was upset, and said, I would stay, ask me, and I was told they needed to ask them first because they had kids and I didn't.

WTF?!?!?! because I made good choices at 16 and didn't spit out a kid, and because my money was for college, not kids, I get second crack at the limited hours available?

Then, the worst thing ever... I was offered tickets to FSU vs UF football one saturday, and I turned them down because I had to work (for my tuition coming up very quickly) When I told my managers that game day, that I turned down tickets..... they thought I was crazy and should have called out.

right there, was the proof I needed. There was a reason he was 32 managing a Wendys and why I was not going to be.... I sacrificed going to what ended up probably being the best game in the rivalry ever... I made right choices, and got punished... and still ended up doing what I needed to increase my economic value.

Well la-tee-da for you. Some people make mistakes when they are young and that doesn't mean they should have to live a life of poverty to make people like you happy. Poverty affects our entire country and is never a "good" thing. No way should employers be able to get away with paying their employees less than a living wage. Minimum wage needs to rise to reflect cost of living increases and inflation. End of story. People's pasts or how they spend their money is irrelevant to the bigger picture.

you are only doomed to it if you continue making poor choices. I made plenty of bad choices in life, and through constant self-reflection, I correct. I may screw up again in the future and be looking for a job.

    please define living wage.

    http://www.today.com/money/see-how-frugal-family-four-lives-comfortably-14k-year-1C8768007

this family of 4 does it on 14k a year....

    8x40 hours = 320 a week x52 weeks = $16640

you seem to think comfort and frills are included in the definition of "livable wage".

    I do not.

The definition of a living wage varies depending on where you live and what the costs of living are in your particular area.

    - - - Updated - - -

I posted a link to the going rates of rentals in Massachusetts in general, and as you can see, a lot of people would not be able to afford to pay their rents and their other bills too, and that is working full time job.

What happens when they can't pay their rents and bills on their full-time wages? Well, what happens is they fall within the poverty guidelines and then are eligible for assistance through various social service programs paid for by taxpayers.

so basically, no set definition.... very convenient for arguments such as this, that you can be able to keep "livable wage" fluid, in order to demand more later, huh?

I have made that same argument that it varies, all the time, but 15/hour supporters won't listen. In my state, Orlando, 15$ an hour is about right for basic needs.... Due to the themeparks, etc... the cost of living is much higher there. But go by any McD's and see what they pay. I bet it isn't 8$ an hour

now, drive up the road to my neck of the woods in NW Florida. I'm halfway between Tally and Pensacola...... the cost of living is MUCH lower here. In fact, beginning teachers make 33k in my last district. but burger flippers do get 8$ an hour here. but, like you said... cost of living, that's doable around here.

now if the state of Florida compels a 15/hour min wage.... Orlando isn't affected that much, and any raise that burger flippers get will be negligible.... but a jump from 8-15 in a short time.... you will have 18 yo fry guys making as much or more than beginning teachers, firefighters, EMS, and cops.

what that will lead to is instead of taking those highstress jobs..... they will outcompete the highschool dropouts for the burgerflipping jobs for roughly the same pay. Because lets face it.... if 2 people walk in for a 35k job flipping burgers, a highschool dropout with a record, or a college grad.... I know who I'd hire....

again, we are getting into cost of living. I also don't believe Mass is paying a burger flipper 8/hour either. Supply and demand would have already bumped up that price point above that.

Exactly. Not to mention being able to afford living ALONE is a luxury people on minimum wage have never had! Two people on minimum wage can afford a few frills. Three or four people can live pretty good. Livable wage is something you work your way up to, not something that's handed to you right outta high school.

And if you're a forty year old burger flipper, better be damn glad you've got a job cuz obviously you have no marketable skills.

Just like anything else, it varies depending upon where you live.

I posted a link either earlier in this thread or in another one, that in Massachusetts, minimum wage is $9.00 an hour, but, if you are a single parent with 2 or 3 children (can't remember which), and you make $10.60 or less per hour, you fall within the poverty guidelines (there was a chart in my link). That is working full time. Of course, like we talked about earlier, it depends upon where you live too. That is a very important factor.

there is a huge problem... that if you agree to stay at a low paying job it's because you have no other options. Your lack of marketability is YOUR problem... not the bossman's
