How does Pete Buttigieg wanting to be with his child out weigh the current transportation crisis? Why does the ENTIRE country have wait until he has bonded with his child to get something done about this? If he has such a desire to be with the child then resign the post so someone else who can actually manage the job can step in. He has no RIGHT to that position in our government. Biden could dismiss him at a moments notice, why didn't he 8 weeks ago call him in and ask for his resignation if he was not going to be able to do the job and appoint someone who could?

Then why are they claiming they are going to?

Our transportation system comes under heavy government regulation and management. That's why we HAVE a department of TRANSPORTATION and a Secretary of TRANSPORTATION. There is a huge effort especially in leadership that Secretary of TRANSPORTATION should be heading and that means IN PERSON meetings with staff and leaders in the industries and going out personally to these ports and transportation centers and reporting back to the President so they can form and execute things to get it moving again. That the ENTIRE country has to wait for Mayor Pete to bond with his child, that all the children on Christmas morning instead of having their toys under the tree should perhaps get a picture of Mayor Pete and his child smiling at the camera and that Christmas dinner may be whatever you can find still on the shelve in the store is absurd.

Yes there’s a lot of bigotry and homophobia in this thread. Having said that, Buttegieg has a top cabinet role. He is not like all other new dads.

In this case I think it is legitimate to criticize, or at least question, the amount of paternity leave he took.

And of course the elephant in the room.....................the unions.

Lazy crane operators making $250,000 a year exacerbating port crisis, truckers say

LONG BEACH, California — Crane operators who belong to a powerful union and earn up to $250,000 a year transferring containers from ships to trucks are worsening the supply chain crisis that threatens Christmas by goofing off on the job, frustrated truckers told the Washington Examiner.

“In 15 years of doing this job, I’ve never seen them work slower,” said Antonio, who has spent hours waiting at Los Angeles County ports for cargo to be loaded. “The crane operators take their time, like three to four hours to get just one container. You can’t say anything to them, or they will just go [help] someone else.”

The Washington Examiner spoke to six truck drivers near the Long Beach/Terminal Island entry route, and each described crane operators as lazy, prone to long lunches, and quick to retaliate against complaints. The allegations were backed up by a labor consultant who has worked on the waterfront for 40 years. None of the truckers interviewed for this story wanted to provide a last name because they fear reprisals at the ports.

The crane operators are part of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which also represents longshoremen. Veteran operators who have a set schedule make $65 an hour and are paid for up to 4,000 hours per year, which include hours they don't actually work - approximately $250,000 a year, according to labor consultant Jim Tessier , who represents longshoremen in disputes against the union.

“What you are talking about is perfectly described behavior,” Tessier said of the crane operators. “This is all a reflection of the management they have down there, the inmates run the asylum. The managers are all afraid to say anything because the operators are so powerful they get management fired if they don’t like them.”

More at the link including how if the independents who rely of getting loaded quickly are discriminated against and if they complain the union workers will get them kicked off site.

And this gem announcing how they are going to open the port 24/7 now

As supply chain troubles mount, Biden touts longer hours for L.A. port

President Biden said Wednesday that a new plan to keep a key U.S. port open “24 hours a day, seven days a week” would relieve pressure on an overworked supply chain that has frustrated Americans and blossomed into a major economic shortcoming.

Speaking at the White House, Biden also hailed commitments from top importers such as Walmart, FedEx and UPS to use the extended hours at the Port of Los Angeles to remove shipping containers that have slowed freight operations.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/10/13/biden-port-los-angeles-supply-chain/

    Great news wouldn't you say

But then you have to drill down the story t find

"But only one of the Long Beach port’s six container terminals works 24 hours a day, and it does so only Monday through Thursday, according to Noel Hacegaba, the port’s deputy executive director of administration and operations."

So why hasn't our "I'M A UNION MAN" President flown out there and to the other ports to get these unions to get their arse's in gear and putting forth the efforts needed to move this cargo.

Butti is a hapless clown in a key position treating it like it's a Hunter Biden "no-show" job.

    It's not just transportation:

The average salary in a Kellogg cereal plant is $10 Thousand a month? And they are striking for more?

Booty gig blames the supply chain crisis on people buying too much and on one airline canceling flights.

Well yes did go back read closer.

So you are saying the Secretary of Transportation has NOT ROLE in getting us through this TRANSPORTATION emergency, he can just sit on his arse at home? The the Department of Transportation which he leads has no role here in this transportation emergency.

Then why do we have this department and this cabinet position

Depends on the emergency. I don’t see how he can fix this one. @US Conservative says the problem is CA laws, how can a federal agency fix that?

trump and supporters are all about gov't running the economy and putting in tariffs, laws, rules to make sure only certain businesses actually succeed. They are the party of the very rich. Always have been.
Why do you think they killed as many unions as possible. So businesses could make workers have little say in their pay and benefits. All about profits for large multinationals.

Wait, trump issued tariffs as big gov't tries and so far fails to dictate the economy. Dems were for tariffs. Now it's the trump party for tariffs and against free market.
So spare us about a party doing the exact opposite of what you think actually happens. Big gov feds usurped free market led by trump. But he was a Dem most of his life.

The same way Obama tried to strong arm his bathroom laws in schools, by threatening to withhold money. And you're also implying that Biden and especially Harris have no influence in CA.

Why not? Pelosi had enough influence to get Obamacare waivers for her pals, surely Biden and Harris have some clout in that state.
