California lawmakers seek to limit police ability to use deadly force

Some California lawmakers are drafting legislation to place more restrictions on when police officers can open fire, in response to the shooting death of Stephon Clark by Sacramento officers, according to The Associated Press.

    What is the proposal?

Assemblyman Kevin McCarty and Assemblywoman Shirley Weber are co-authoring a bill to change the standard from “reasonable force” to “necessary force” for police when deciding how to respond.

Under current law, officers have the discretion to respond with deadly force if they reasonably believe there is a threat to their safety, even if it turns out that threat didn’t exist.

    Skipping ...

The proposed new standard would only allow officers to shoot if “there were no other reasonable alternatives to the use of deadly force,” an American Civil Liberties Union advocate told the AP.

It's about time that a muzzle be put on police who insist on shoot first ask questions later mentality. If there is a fear of prosecution for murder, a cop might think twice before shooting. They are equipped with tasers for a reason, they don't usually kill but they are generally useful in neutralizing a threat. I'm not saying it's the only weapon of choice that police should use but it should be the first weapon of choice.

I love this part of your post

they are generally useful in neutralizing a threat.

So the times they don't neutralize a threat and a family loses a police officer that's ok with you huh?

Its better to lose a few cops then to ever have them err on the side of caution in their dangerous job.

Heh, 3 cops were shot dead this week but police shootings are down so its a win for us!

This is awesome. More police in the rest of the country, and you guys will be safe when all the police quit.

Of course this is the type of legislation that comes from a couple idiots that never have to worry about interacting with illegally armed thug/criminal with multiple arrests and conviction. Clearly these two morons have more concern for ghetto trash then they do the people that stand between them and those that would steal them blind at gunpoint.

    Then again it's California!

    I'm glad you "love" it.

Gee, please show me where I posted that. Why do you feel the need to invent things in my post that I never said? Does it help you with any of your arguments?

No but correct training helps to prevent police who are armed and dangerous from assassinating unarmed and sometimes completely innocent people. Police work is dangerous but all those who join the police force know or should know what the dangers are. That's why police are usually armed to the teeth and well trained (or should be).

Unnecessary death(s) is a loss for everyone. Do you have a point to make with respect to this OP? So far you haven't made any that I can see.

So basically california want's you to be shot at before you fire back.

Hopefully, if you live, you can get the bad guy.

I'm thinking that if I'm a cop out there I'm just not going to engage anyone I think might be armed....screw that....not worth my life.

The alt-left Democratic wackos in California would rather have unarmed outnumbered cops like the UK has...

Or the innocent, unarmed, 14 year old stay at home fathers who just beat the guy in Jersey to death in broad daylight on a sidewalk.

The climate in California is such that most cops currently feel they are already in jeopardy of going to prison whenever they use lethal force. The Democratic Party in California runs all the large cities and counties, and many of these elected officials already feel contempt for law enforcement, and the cops know it. The officers that police these communities realize that these leftist politicians will jump at the chance to prosecute a cop to bolster their bonafides with their constitutes who also hate the police.

Police will use what force they feel they need to in order to save their lives; this legislation will ensure some officers go to prison; larger payouts to those the police shoot (justified shooting or not, most people shot by police (or their families) get a payday funded by taxpayers; and some cops will hesitate to use deadly force and die as a result.

This won’t end well. Disarm the people and make the cops afraid to respond.

Yup California, the most peaceful place for law enforcement to work! I don't even know why California has police, let alone arm them?

Shooting a fleeing African-American male eight times in the back isn't police defending themselves from a dangerous criminal. Just to be sure, when he was down, they put one in his chest. WTF! If this were an isolated incident is one thing, but it is not. Cops are just the same as the rest of America, 10% exemplary, 80% good, 10% horrible.

There's nothing surprising that a majority of gun violence incidents take place in population centers. Flash: Manhattan has more incidents of gun violence than Mobridge, SD.
