You can certainly tell those who have kids from those that don’t.

The loss of social interaction is a big negative. Kids growing up with their primary interaction being through screens, is DEVASTATING!

Not all jobs are designed around working from home so there’s that. It’s just not feasible.

Teachers have to get up to speed in proper online teaching techniques which are totally different than a class room.

NOTHING good has coming from this except for those who don’t want to deal with anyone face to face.

Have you thought about the moral implcations of people being irresponsible and that irresponsibilitly leading to the deaths of health care workers and emergency responders?

Do you recognize that there IS a plan that identifies the steps for opening our economy in a safe manner?

Do you think it was a perfectly moral idea to have OSHA shut down and empployers given full legal protection for ignoring the easily remedied methods of containing the spread - thus leading to clusters of deaths around various kinds of factories?

The thing is, EVERYBODY wants the economy open. ABSOLUTELY everyone.

What hits me as odd is to DEMAND that it be done in a way that causes the most casualties - even among those trying to save our lives.

It hits me as criminally immoral.

AND, there is a solution - it does NOT need to be done this way.

True, but this is not caused by the SIP pandemic. This has been happening gradually over the last couple of generations. I finally reached a point where I walked out on any lunch/dinner outing if the person/people are checking their texts every two seconds.

Beyond that, the teachers I know have had to quickly adjust to online learning and food service workers are considered essential to feed the children that qualify for free lunches if school was in session.

There are no easy answers, but I know the answer is NOT dividing over party lines about who is at fault. We all here and we all need to contribute to overcoming, learning, healing from what is probably the biggest catastrophe in many of our lifetimes.

When we depend so heavily on the internet for information of all kinds, for education (as you mention), for business, for communication, etc., it becuase VERY clear that high speed internet is something that eveyone has to be able to access.

We can't have a system such that if someone can't afford internet, then they can't take part in our society.

Truer words have never been spoken. Some of my neighbors still have flip phones. They have no idea how to do Google searches. Some of them still use checks and have never heard of email. I feel like I'm stuck in a time warp. The reality is...some families simply cannot afford wi-fi or computers to access it.

As I said, there are no easy answers. For the sake of all our futures, I hope we can come up with some viable plan that works for most, if not all, people.

    Agreed.

BTW, it isn't just "time warp" people.

I'm buying a new car and I'm not interested in financing. They won't take a bank transfer. They won't put it on a standard card that I have that has enough room for that kind of thing. The cash machine they have on site would be roasted if I went that route, plus I'd have to talk to the bank, I'd bet, then they'd have to count out tens of thousands in $20 bills. And, so they won't take real live cash - and I don't like hauling that kind of loot, anyway. They aren't interested in PayPal (as if that is what PayPal is for).

They WANT me to write a check! Or, they want me to walk in with a cashier's check - which I don't like, either.

So, I'm going to write them a check!

I guess I better look to see what the little blanks on a check are for - lol!

What is the point of having a cash machine on site if they don't accept cash?
Why don't you like the cashier's check idea, if I may ask?
Do you have checks or will you have to order them? Are you going to pick ones with the cool designs?

This must be some new gimmick...let's make it as inconvenient as possible. I'm no business exec. but that doesn't sound lucrative at all. ;-)

They sell parts and accessories, too.

The point is that they aren't going to count out tens of thousands of dollars in 20 dollar bills. And, they don't want that kind of cash around.
A cashier's check is just like cash. So, it's no more safe than carrying the cash, though less bulkey, perhaps.
LOL (with you) on the other! Actually, my wife likes paying bills with checks. And, and I'm fine with not being involved in paying bills.

There isn't anything strange about this with automobile purchases. The store isn't going to want to put thousands of dollars on a credit card, because of the bank fees.

With real estate, it's more likely that one would convey money through a wire transfer to an escrow account - especially if you're not taking out a loan (thus involving hundreds of thousands or millions).

I completely forgot to check this thread. Sorry.

    Here are some ideas:

How about you get your wife to get the cashier's check and take it to the seller immediately?

Have the owner meet you at the bank and hand the check right over immediately.

Protest their silly policy and have some fun with it and pay with all coins*. I'm sure they would love that! lol

Yes - you missed a WHOLE LOT of this conversation.

As I pointed out, as cashier's check is like cash and I don't like walking around with tens of thousands in cash.

And, asking my wife to do that is NOT a solution, is it?

The "owner" is a car dealership. They are not going to follow you to a bank.

    MORE TO THE POINT:

I have never once indicated I was upset by how standard transactions at this level are carried out.

It started when someone disparaged checking accounts, suggesting writing a check is some call back to a prior era.

I presented a case where they are not just useful, but the STANDARD.

Now, YOU come along and ... WHAT? What IS your angle here? Why did you decide to post?

Are you someone else who doesn't like checks?

Schools are in a tough place. I think that ultimately, they're going to have to adapt to a fluid situation on the ground which will vary regionally and in intensity. They may need to be prepared for interruptions in the school year, possibly even multiple times. There may be schools that jump back and forth between in-person and cyber schooling during the year in response to virus patterns. Our local district of 6 schools just put out a survey today where they mention what they call a hybrid schedule. It is 2 or 3 days a week at school, and then cyber schooling on the weekdays they are home.

Parents are going to need to be patient with their schools. And teachers and school staff with the parents. Nobody wants things to be this way, but they are, and adaptation is the only legitimate response.

Thanks for sharing that article. I've been wondering what would happen for classes that CANNOT be taught via the internet (ie. anatomy, biology, etc.). It's hard to believe they can't find a way not to push these kids into schools too soon or interrupt their education. I know everyone is scrambling to adapt but it just seems unfair to put them in that position. I wonder how history will write this story. Wow.

Thanks for sharing that link. I was moreso speaking to them having their lives uprooted or scrambling to find on-campus programs to remain in the US to finish their studies.

Further, my concern isn't for the students, themselves, relative to the virus, as the studies clearly show a very low risk rate. But, what if they are asymptomatic and carry the virus to their parents and/or grandparents or immuno-compromised people?

If you travel to Vietnam right now from the US, you spend 2 weeks in quarantine.

What if most of these students have to return home because they can't find/enroll in on-campus courses to continue their studies or their parents aren't willing for them to take the risk by returning to classroom study too soon?

We don't allow the government to produce boots or tractors. Why would we allow it to produce education?

You're using old data from China

The actual risk of death is a bunch higher and there's also the fact that 20% of hospitalizations (which occur when you are VERY sick) are with people between 20 and 45.

You are asking a lot from teachers to risk their lives to teach.

Do we simply tell every teacher over 50 that they're done?
