Is it possible to be a Conservative/Right-Winger and be an Atheist. I have never met anybody from the right who said they didn't believe in God. There must be some, surely?

I'd be interested to know how right wingers can be Christian. The politics of capitalism and guns and no benefits and all that, are not really compatible with Christ, who was really supportive of the poor and I'm sure would quite like the concept of a safety net to help disadvantaged people.

I've met a few. I know on Mighty Righty there was a staunch atheist, but was very conservative.

If you take a look at the political ideology table on the Religious Landscape Survey, you'll see where about 20% that identify as unaffiliated with a religion also identify as conservative. While it does not separate atheist out from unaffiliated, it illustrates that religion is not necessary to hold conservative values.

I'm not the only atheist conservative I have ever met. I know for a fact there are others.

Ayn Rand comes immediately to mind. And when it comes to economics and gun control, I tend to be pretty conservative myself. By British standards, I'm probably far-right.

The right wing, which is conservative, are supporters of tradition, which is what religion is.

Right winger I believe. Conservative not so.

I will explain. For me a conservative is that person that wants to keep the traditions. If I don't remember wrongly you defended for example the homosexual marriage. It goes against the idea of the conservative of conservatism of the traditional values of the family...

And in other things I think that maybe you aren't conservatist, that now I can't come to think. And if you're voting Republican, for me is the proof how wrong goes the democracy in USA. How you could vote against what you are. Because Republicans are against what you represent, homosexuality and atheism.

Are you suggesting that for someone to be a conservative that they must hold all positions typically thought of as conservative?

The term Conservative typically refers to "moral" conservatism (i.e. you are a literal Christian bible thumper so the absence of a belief in the bible is a problem). Right wing is more generic and implies that you stand for self-reliance. Many Republicans, Democrats and Independents endorse the separation of church and state, however, I am not aware of any "Conservatives" that separate church and state. In fact, it might be a contradiction. Fiscal conservation (i.e. fiscal conservationist, the ability to maintain a balanced budget) is sometimes misconstrued with conservatism.

There's a lot of athiest Libetarians which is close to being right wing even though it's ring-wing-left-wing poltics but generally considered ultra-fiscal conservative, and depending on what morons run for office either social conservative (I've seen some southerners run as Libs even though they are mostly Republicans) to very socially liberal. Depends. But yes you can.

Nope, it's a rule, handed down by God thousands of years before Republicans existed. You see, he's all knowing and all seeing. He told me what he sees for you actually too. A room where the walls looke like mattresses and a locked door.

You're just fooled because right wingers know they'll lose votes and friends if they don't "believe". It's all pretence and fake even without that level of deceit.

Are you sure you do not mean social conservatism? I get far more results searching this term in google than moral conservatism.

I had thought the original poster was referring to political conservatism, as the OP specifically says "Is it possible to be a Conservative/Right-Winger". I believe this is the classification intended by the general term conservatism with regard to politics, or at the least wikipedia redirects from political_conservatism --> conservatism.

However, perhaps some clarification is in order to specify what the OP means by Conservative.

This is why we have "Social Conservatives" and "fiscal Conservatives". A "right winger" can be either.

A social conservative has values that more align with God's Values. The Liberal and atheist has values that more align with human values.

So and Atheist can be easily a fiscal conservative...but not so much a social conservative.

I think you will find libertarians have quite a few Atheists.

But a person on the "right" is first and foremost "fiscal"

It isn't every day, week, or even every month that I agree with CKW, but yeah, this. Except for the part about "God's Values."

You should try looking outside America, I suspect. I know dozens of them.

Most true conservatives I know are definitely atheist and/or they don't care if you are or not. There aren't many left but some.

In terms of values and traditions, conservatives are merely yesterday progressives.

One of the days to come, even American conservatives will be fighting for what will then be good old traditional values like freedom from religion, abortion and homosexuality against even more progressive ideas.

Is this a serious question? If so, you really need to get out more. ;)

In understand that you have a different personal definition. But by the definition most often used in America, I am considered a conservative. I align with them on most issues.

Which is why I used the qualifier "most". If I align with them on 90% of the major issues, how does that not make me one of them?

But that is not the only issue conservatives care about. I also oppose abortion and support prayer in school and do not believe there is a legal separation of church and state. Would you consider those beliefs conservative?

Is it possible that you are mistaken about what you think my opinions and priorities are?

You think all gays should ONLY vote in favor of policies that advance the gay agenda? All blacks should ONLY vote in favor of policies that advance the black agenda? Is this really your opinion on how people should vote?

Republicans are against aggressive foreign policy? Republicans are against banning abortion? Republicans are against allowing prayer in school? When did that happen?
