Done wading through this. The real danger is in assisted living, and long term care settings like memory care, skilled nursing homes and of course hospitals. This one joins a line including Norovirus, Clostridium difficile, and our old standby influenza. Its incredibly difficult to contain something like this because so many people are traveling to and from your 'home' each day and they are moving all over the place. You got staff, delivery personnel, visitors and residents coming and going 24/7, and many of them are traveling to other densely populated destinations. People are by nature non-compliant with efforts to contain contamination. Some are stubborn. Some have dementia or mental illness. Some are just inconsiderate jackasses, and we haven't even begun to discuss the patients and residents yet!

You can't just quarantine people in this institution settings based on probability of contamination and you can't keep out every employee who has symptoms of a cold in the middle of cold/flu season There just are not enough staff. These places pay some of the least competitive wages, the working conditions are bad, burnout rates start climbing in less than a year and turnover is ridiculously high.

Staffing ratios in direct care staffing are mandated at the federal level so you can't just send someone home at 2AM without knowing where the replacement body is coming from and the first lesson care staff learn is NEVER PICK UP THE PHONE!

The notion of keeping residents in their rooms in these places, when one of these infections is wandering the halls, is very difficult. You can't lock them in the rooms, and the systems put in place are designed to encourage socialization. The activities are communal. The meals are communal. That's not just because its more efficient from a staffing perspective, but because we know isolation among the elderly and the sick is its own 'co-morbidity' Nothing will slow down and complicate recovery from physical or psychological trauma like heart surgery, depression, hip replacement, stroke, etc sitting or lying around, isolated in your room. If we want them to get better, we have to get them out of those four walls and moving around and socializing with people.

Unless the virus has already impacted the facility, you are doing more harm to your residents and patients by trying to keep them away from each other and trapped in that building, than you are if you don't. This is a lose/lose proposition.

Somebody from Left World might misinterpret this thread as “voter suppression” Russian interference tactic

Nice to know you're in favor of billionaire's buying elections. The funny thing is Mini Mike spent $600M and struck out, Jeb spent $100M and struck out, and Trump spent $70M and became POTUS.

You can just feel the Biden enthusiasm, can't you?

    /Sarcasm off

Perhaps he would do better if debates where held earlier in the day, those with dementia don't do well late at night.

one other point. This notion of reducing physical contact will also come with unintended consequences. We know what happens when people are not touched, when they are not hugged, their hands are not held, and they don't get physical affection. Humans are like other primates, they need touch for psycho-social health and well being and I don't think 'bumping elbows' is going to cut it when someone is sad, in pain, or in grief. We are going to have to be willing to hold their hand, give them a hug, when we tell them bad news, or they are upset if we want them to actually feel like they matter and their pain matters. Let's not forget for so many of our elderly, the staff becomes their emotional support, their family when family is otherwise absent or distant.

The viruses and bacteria of the world are not the only risks our older people face each day and the other risks are not screened in a saliva sample!

    Temporarily.

Does not change the fact that Bloomers is proof that TV ads and buying social media does not work, no matter how much money you throw at it. Biden better brush up on sounding sensible when he opens his mouth, much better plan for him.

    And recent history yours.

How many states did Bloomer win the primary in? After dropping how much money? His group is going to help Biden? That is the Biden secret weapon?

Best thing Bloomer and his failed posse can do is buy a lot of duct tape to shut Biden up. His mouth is his biggest weakness.
