People don't drop dead from this as soon as they get it. It takes about 7-10 days to get sick and die from this, so to get a reading on the mortality rate, you have to look at the current number of deaths and compare that to how many infections there were a week ago.

    Hysteria par exellence.

Here is the most objective honest and informative commentary on the COVID-19 Virus by an infectious disease expert from Johns Hopkins as he is interviewed by Sam Harris:
    https://samharris.org/podcasts/191-early-thoughts-pandemic/

    Highlights:
It's going to be a btch, but not a cataclysmic event. It's in the same contagious category as the flu, but with higher serious respiratory issues for certain high-risk individual than a normal flu virus. High-risk individuals would be wise to take sanitary, hygienic, and social precautions to the degree they can rationally do so; normal healthy people need to practice good hygiene and sanitation, which they ought to be doing during flu season already. The virus is fragile and has a short air and surface life (though some studies have suggested otherwise), and is mainly transmitted by breathing in air infused virus-infested water droplets, i.e., from the coughing and sneezing of infected individuals. Anti-viral drugs for treatment are a few months away; vaccines, 18 months. The mortality rate will be around .06%.

In summary, most people will not need hospitalization, but many will get sick, the old and ill will suffer higher death rates, the economy and everyday life will have problems that will be made worse by politicians, both Left and Right, and we better learn from this for when the inevitable happens--a virus with a high death rate (60+%) and low contagion factor mutates and becomes as contagious as this one. That would be cataclysmic. Say like, the Avian Flu. (5N1 is a type of influenza virus that causes a highly infectious, severe respiratory disease in birds called avian influenza (or \"bird flu\"). Human cases of H5N1 avian influenza occur occasionally, but it is difficult to transmit the infection from person to person. When people do become infected, the mortality rate is about 60%. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/h5n1-people.htm)

In other words, not as catastrophic as the hysterical fear-mongers, nor as benign as the casually cavalier (me) laugh off. Serious enough for concern, but benign enough for a good night rest.

With all that being said, you still don't destroy an economy, bailout industries, and lock up the living for a virus with a 99-99.3 survival rate.

One of the best minds on the subject that I've heard.

And how many of them would be dead without the virus? Will the overall death rate for the elderly increase, decrease, or remain constant?

The death rate will increase a little bit at the extreme high end of longevity, that is, for people like me in their mid-seventies. A lil' bit.

But like Sarge said, what the hell is wrong with you guys, you want to live forever or something?

“There have been 105 flu-related deaths among children this season, a higher total at this point of the year than any season in the past decade.Two-thirds of these deaths were associated with influenza B viruses, the CDC noted.”

    https://www.usnews.com/news/health-...-thats-sickened-26-million-may-be-at-its-peak

Yet, we didn’t destroy the economy to save the children. Why? Because the severity of the destruction would far outweighed any healthbenefit gained. A principle that we have irrationally abandoned with this Chinese bug.

Stopping the healthy from living to save the dead from dying and the sick from ailing is insane.

Today is Tuesday, March 17th and you responded to a comment I made on Feb, 24th. What do you think now? Do you still claim 'mass hysteria' and 'last ditch effort to harm the economy'? As you can see, everything I said was 100% correct.

    Wow.:smh:

    This post didn't age well.

It is hard to imagine that some people actually bought into the idea that the "Panic over coronavirus" was some sort of Deep State Conspiracy.

    Wow.:smh:

    I did not.

Hard for me to believe some on here bought into a lot of things. Like the deaths would be exponentially growing and doubly daily, 2 million dead, 1 million dead, 500k dead...bodies stacked in the streets, hospitals turning away people in droves. I think i even remember the term “bloodshed” being used...President Trump was telling people to drink pool chemicals to cure themselves...

So much silliness preached as gospel by some..

No. If the median age was 65 then half would be below 65.

Anyhoo, this OP aged well. Some of the other predictions of apocalypse haven't.

Most people have known for some time that the CCP Deep State is responsible for the CCP Chinese Coronavirus Pandemic.

"He has a simple pitch for tourists: “Don’t let this kind of virus scare you off.”
Even tourists have noticed how empty the streets in Chinatown are.

“This place is dead. Right now. Every restaurant is empty. Every shop is empty. There’s no tourists walking around here,” Peter Wood from Burbank told KPIX 5.

“You should come to Chinatown. Precautions have been taken by our city. We know that there is concern about tourism all throughout the world, but we think it’s very safe to be in Chinatown. I hope that others will come,” said Pelosi at a dim sum restaurant Monday afternoon."

Thanks to the actions of dangerous Democrat party bosses like Pelosi voters are just beginning to suspect that it is the CCP/DP Chinese Coronavirus.

In fact, DP party bosses worked hard to facilitate the spread of the pandemic in the US.
