Chicago Drops SAT/ACT Requirement. Will Others Follow? The University of Chicago on Thursday morning announced that it was dropping the requirement that all undergraduate applicants submit SAT or ACT scores. Hundreds of colleges -- including elite liberal arts colleges -- have stopped requiring the SAT or ACT. But Chicago's move is the first by one of the very top research universities in the country. And the move is striking coming from an institution, known for its academic rigor, that has had no difficulty attracting top applicants. For the class that enrolled in September 2017, the university received 27,694 applicants and admitted 2,419. The middle 50 percent of the range of SAT scores of admitted applicants was 1460 to 1550. And why are they doing this? 2017 Mean SAT Scores, and Percentage Meeting Benchmarks, by Race and Ethnicity Group Reading and Writing Asian: 569 White: 565 Native: Hawaiian/Pacific Islander:498 Latino: 500 American Indian/Alaska Native: 486 Black: 479 Group Mathematics Asian: 612 White: 553 Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander: 488 Latino: 487 American Indian/Alaska Native: 477 Black: 462 Group Met Both Benchmarks Asian: 70% White: 59% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander: 32% Latino: 31% American Indian/Alaska Native: 27% Black: 20% If there is another conclusion one could draw, I'd like to hear it. In the meantime, they seem to be replacing the SAT/ACT with this: In addition, the university announced a new program in which it will invite students to submit a two-minute video introduction of themselves. So being a Youtube star might get you into college easier than good scores.
My sister went through medical school at the Chicago circle campus and pointed out that she needed to keep her grades up, or get tossed out. At the same time a minority can have his/her, grades drop below the point, and still graduate.
Well, the SAT/ACT tests are being gamed now, anyway. Kids are taking ACT/SAT prep classes as early as the 8th grade. I don't think the SAT/ACT are as accurate of a predictor of college success anymore because of this.
I am partly learning disabled and had terrible low scores on my SATs and LSAT tests. But I graduated from college and law school and was on the Honor Roll several times.
You're not from Earth, are you. here is one, just typed it in and got lots of hits. This is becoming a problem in the courts, with whited claiming discrimination. https://newsone.com/165891/many-whites-filing-reverse-discrimination-lawsuits/
where in your link does it say that whites/minorities have a different set of grading standards to maintain metriculation?
Jeeeeeeeeesus.... ever heard of an affirmative action? What do you think it is? It’s just another application of it.
He cited some nebulous law/regulation or whatever that set a different set of standards and I want to know which one it is. As usual, you can bet we will have a LONG wait for any such "proof".
That's more than Barack Obama could claim. Obama never made the deans list at Occidental, Columbia or at Harvard Law School and never earned a GPA.
When I was in law school you had to be on the Dean's list to work on the school's law review publication.
Not if you're an affirmative action law student attending Harvard Law School. When did you take the SAT Mr_Truth ? The SAT has been dumbed down three or four times over the decades so students would score higher. Today when you take the math section of the SAT you are allowed to use a calculator. When I took the SAT in 68 there was no such thing as a pocket calculator and you couldn't even use a slide rule.
still waiting for ''proof'' of the claim made that there is a different set of grading standards = ''My sister went through medical school at the Chicago circle campus and pointed out that she needed to keep her grades up, or get tossed out. At the same time a minority can have his/her, grades drop below the point, and still graduate.''
