Congress is threatening to pass a bill that will allow the government to censor the internet. It is our duty as American citizens not to allow the government to do this. Our Ancestors fought and died so that we could enjoy freedom and liberty. Now we are going to loose both.

This is just so outrageous the American government is going to censor the internet just like North Korea, Iran, China. Americans have lost their jobs, and now will loose what is most dear and valuable...FREEDOM.

Congress has to be stopped they cannot be allowed to take away our freedom. If they succeed it will set a dangerous precedent that will allow them to take away even more of our rights.

Last time I checked the Republicans had control of congress, so I don't see them passing anything that gives the government full power. Who is the author of such an un American vision, anyway?

Lamar Smith Republican from San Antonio Texas is the creator of the bill. The fact that a republican would put forth such a bill shows that the GOP support bigger government.

Actually it doesn't. The title of the bill is Stop Online Piracy Act.

"The bill expands the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods.[2] Now before the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the Protect IP Act.[3]"

Do you have a vested interest in this Mocram since it obviously was misrepresented in the original post.

I would think that stopping Software Piracy would be a bipartisan issue, or should we just turn a blind eye to the theft of intellectual property?

And it was passed overwhelmingly by both houses of Congress. Oops, did we conveniently forget that part. Perhaps that's why socialists prefer dictatorships. So much neater. Easier for them to remember, too.

Please, by all means show me proof that the Patriot Act has been used to violate the rights of innocent Americans?

    It should be quite easy.

I mean for a law that is so hated, and so evil and wicked and obviously a violation of our rights...

Why isn't the ACLU or some other organzation suing the Government in the Supreme Court? That court is notoriously originalist and I see no reason not to trust their judgement in such a matter.

If we can't trust Congress, and we can't trust the President and the Executive and according to Libertarians we can't trust the Supreme Court either.. then who the hell do we trust to arbitrate our different opinions and decide which one is correct?

Cute, you think your "opinion" actually matters. Corporate opinion is the only thing that matters.

Well that's a good question. The fact of the matter is that the Supreme Court really can't be trusted, because the judges appointed to the court tend to follow the political leanings of the President that appointed them. Every law that has been passed, that has clearly violated the Constitution was passed because the majority of the judges had political or theological motivations that caused them to support those laws. I'm surprised more people don't see the collusion that goes on within government. Some examples-

The electoral college (appointed by the government) ultimately decides who becomes president.

The supplementary budget for schools is given out by the federal government, so unless you teach exactly what the government wants taught and to the standards they choose, they can withhold their financial support.

The Supreme Court and most major government positions are appointed, rather than elected positions, which means ultimately that the government in power decides who holds a position of authority, rather than "we the people".

This is just the top three problems with government these days. With that in mind, I'm not totally anti-government, but I am absolutely against the manipulation of the government and the safeguards put into place to protect the people from these manipulations.

This seems off-topic, but keep in mind that we're talking about whether or not it matters who gets to vote, well I think an even more important question is does it really matter if we vote at all?
