Anyone who needs proof that the U.S. copyright system is incredibly flawed need not look any farther than the lastest DMCA fiasco. It seems that Entura International, who works for Columbia Pictures, the distributor of the summer flop "Pixels", has issued DMCA takedown notices to Vimeo for all videos with the word "Pixels" in the title. This includes an independent video called "Pixels" from 2006, the official video for the Belgium-based electronic music Pixels Festival, a 2011 video titled "Pantone Pixels", a music video for the band "The Pixels" and even the official movie trailer to the very movie they are trying to protect. What is even worse is that they actually included the 2010 video by Patrick Jean, titled "Pixels" which was the inspiration for the Adam Sandler flick, the DMCA takedown notice. Yes, I have heard of this.I think that if the corporations had their way, we wouldn't "own" anything, we would just be renting from them. It is weird that the libertarians will moan and complain about the government taking away property rights, but then turn a blind eye when a corporation does it.
I'm not familiar with any of the "Pixels" you're referring to, but I tend to ignore popular media. In principle though, it should take more resemblance than merely both using a commonly used word. You shouldn't be able make a movie called "The" and then demand all other media using the same word be taken out. I hope Anonymous spanks them.
