What characteristic lends itself to a more lethal impact from the 5.56 rather than the 9mm. If you answer honestly I can show you why your statement is dishonest.

so should we not let 18 year old drive big pickup trucks because they sure will do more damage when they hit someone then a sub compact car

so look what the anti-gun nuts did, they are buying so few guns there now, they are thinking of not selling any guns... it amazes me gun nuts attacking a store that sells guns cause they wont sell ar-15's

IMO Dicks' action is as responsible and sensible as that taken by the many dentists that no longer give out free lollipops to their child patients. If all local gun stores would follow suit, the country would be a safer place--and if something like this is not done soon by the gun industry a political will may build that will simply enable the government to totally ban the sale of such guns in the US.

Restricting sales of guns like these to outlets which require more knowledge and sane intent to access would IMO cut down on the accessibility of such multiple-killer weapons by the mentally incompetent and emotionally unfit while preserving the right of those with legitimate legal uses for them to still obtain them legally.

IMO many industries are willfully blind to the negative effects of their wares' getting into the wrong hands, but to me the gun industry has to be considered a leader of the pack. Think, for example, of how many in the Middle East might still be alive if someone wasn't constantly sending military hardware over there. It's like selling poison.

You will notice I did not mention .22 LR, I mentioned center fire rifle cartridges, you know the difference right? In fact, there are only a handful of readily available center fire cartridges that are less powerful than the .223. The vast majority are much more powerful and anything you would deer hunt with will be more powerful. How you can try to make the .223 some sort of super lethal round is ridiculous, it's a varmint round for God's sake. What do you want, anything with the power of a .223 or higher should be banned in semi-auto?

Do note the post being responded to by yourself specifically stated centerfire-type rifle cartridges. Not merely centerfire-type cartridges in general. Was this omission on the part of yourself due to being in a hurry to respond, or was it actually deliberate to try and change the narrative by comparing rifle-type cartridges to handgun-type cartridges?

The .222 Remington, upon which the 5.56x45mm cartridge was based upon before the AR-15 and M16 ever came into existence, had a muzzle velocity of three thousand and ninety five feet per second with a projectile weighing fifty five grains. When the projectile is a mere forty grains, the muzzle velocity is three thousand, five hundred and fifty eight feet per second.

The opinion of the physician in question is of no relevance to the discussion. Neither the cartridge, nor the rifles that make use of it, are going anywhere. Therefore there is no point in discussing such a position.

    Indeed not.

Thank you Cpt. Obvious, but that's not what this exercise is about and is an obvious dodge.

You would need to define the public and explain how it would bring down the retailer. If you are arguing that they can choose not to shop there, then that is fine. Not much else would be fine.

Fair enough. I was citing cartridges that are less powerful than .223/5.56. You want to cite ones that are more powerful? Go ahead. I chose not to because, as another poster stated, higher velocity, higher mass rounds are more expensive, and not as readily available to most as is the .223/5.56, and, as such, are rarely, if ever, used in firearm homicides.

I have never once suggested that .223 is "some sort of super lethal round", and I beg you to find where I did. I was simply pointing out the damage it can do in relation to a 9mm. You'll notice that I also specifically stated that not many people are shot with .223/5.56 outside of mass shootings, which make up only a small percentage of firearm fatalities.

However, this round is hardly a "varmint round", as I doubt that the military would have adopted it, and used it for decades, if it were.

As to banning anything, I again beg you to show me where I have ever suggested such a ridiculous notion.

I am, however, of the belief that an 18 year old with no training whatsoever, should be banned from purchasing higher power ammunition (for the sake of argument, let's just say .223 and above.) That opinion comes from years of range time watching unsupervised teenagers break nearly every safety rule in the book.

The 2nd amendment may be a right inherent. That does not, to me, suggest that every single person exercising said right should not undergo, at the very least, some level of training before operating a higher powered weapon, or any weapon, for that matter.

Well, excuse me, CPL Obvious, seems like every other post you're endorsing a gun ban of one flavor or another.

I'm not against some kind of gun ban but what is really bothersome is that 2nd amendment defenders that think was given to us by Moses, have NO solution suggestions at all (other than the insane "more is better").
