People forget that in the 1950s, many people including President Eisenhower were big advocates of finding peaceful uses for nuclear weapons. Whether it was digging canals, opening access to deep deposits of oil, almost anything you can think of.

But it was said that in general people turned against any idea of using nuclear weapons for peaceful purposes. Thinking perhaps that if their use became accepted even for peaceful purposes that their acceptance as a part of armed conflicts would inevitably follow.

I was not being serious. Nuking a hurricane is preposterous.

But perhaps we could build a very large vacuum and suck up the hurricane like a house vacuum sucking up a hair ball.

Actually it is not. As far as stopping the hurricane, it is entirely possible if you used in the right location at the right time.

You do know that many nuclear air burst have been done without any noticeable repercussion in the 50's and 60's.

The thing is people mock and ridicule this idea just because President Donald Trump mentioned it. In reality its like the idea of the U.S. buying Greenland. Using nuclear weapons against hurricanes has been proposed for years by people who have actually studied the concept. Just as the idea of buying Greenland has been proposed by people with serious foreign policy credential.

But people mock and deride those ideas solely because President Trump mentioned them. Not that he should have mentioned them as these responses were predictable.

And yet NOAA scientists are saying otherwise.

Just think if President Trump would have issued an executive order to tear down what border walls or fences there were and for the Border Patrol and ICE to stand down.

The Democrats in Congress would have appropriated a trillion dollars for building a wall and quadrupling the size of the Border Patrol and ICE.

Don't be silly... Those aren't high altitude test. Your comparing apple to oranges.
I gave you the list of high altitude test, not the list of atmospheric test. Learn the difference please.

Atmospheric testing designates explosions that take place in the atmosphere. Generally these have occurred as devices detonated on towers, balloons, barges, islands, or dropped from airplanes, and also those only buried far enough to intentionally create a surface-breaking crater. Nuclear explosions close enough to the ground to draw dirt and debris into their mushroom cloud can generate large amounts of nuclear fallout due to irradiation of the debris.

    Exoatmospheric (or High Altitude)
testing refers to nuclear tests conducted above the atmosphere. The test devices are lifted on rockets. These high altitude nuclear explosions can generate a nuclear electromagnetic pulse (NEMP) when they occur in the ionosphere, and charged particles resulting from the blast can cross hemispheres following geomagnetic lines of force to create an auroral display.

Again, here's the list and check the last number of each test. That's the altitude of the explosion.

Hardtack I includes about 40 test. Not all of them were high altitude. I'm talking about thew high altitude one and I only listed those.

Make all the excuses you like. Every report on using a nuke for a hurricane will cause radiation fallout. It's an absolutely stupid idea.

"Don't be stupid" is very insulting. That was uncalled for. I've been civil with you. Careful, lest the mods give you demerits.

Let me bottom-line this for you:

    1. A nuke, even a big one, would have no effect on a hurricane, and even setting one off far away could have a deleterious effect on human populations, not to mention the local sea life. People on our west coast are beginning to find cancers that scientists predicted from the fallout that drifted across the Pacific after the earthquake/tsunami in 2011 and the damage to the Fukushima nuclear reactor.

    2. Trump is an idiot for even thinking that. Most nine year olds could have told him why that's a bad idea.

In Katrina 1577 people died in Louisiana and 238 died in Mississippi. Using a nuke to knockout a hurricane would need to be weighed against that and many other things, but there should be no fear of asking the question.

Most likely it's not even close to feasible, but ask the question honestly.
