"Shut up" does not resolve problems, but it would appear that silencing speech is the tool which the illiberal authoritarians will use to promote the appearance of "unity". Debate is what happens when people are adulting. Shut up is what happens when pre-adolescents don't have any substantive defense for their position.

The left is badly mangling any idea of a fresh start by launching an existential threat to civil liberties. Not a great start.

The power of private companies is limited to their own employees, not to their end-users. So yeah, a private company can censor or fire their own employees; but they can't censor those who simply use their services, because their end-users are part of the public domain, and the public domain is protected by the constitutional right of free speech.

It would make more sense for the government to shut down Twitter and Facebook, than to allow Twitter and Facebook to shut down our free speech rights.

We need to define which companies are and are not protected by Section 230. Companies which want to have editorial control over content do not qualify for Section 230 protections. They are "publishers". Companies which operate as a virtual public square qualify for Section 230 protections. They are "platforms".

The totalitarian politicos on the left want all media to act as publishers of government directed and approved content, censor other opinions, and have immunity from legal liabilities. That's just wrong.
