I disagree entirely. Southern conservatives who bear no resemblance to today's democrats in any form, just called themselves democrats. Even just remove Race from the argument, they were more state rights, smaller government, stronger on defense than many republicans today are. These same states are now solidly republican even with the same voters, even though thru the rest of the country much more people switched to independent.

What hurt black america was the drug war.

 

What hurt Black families is the destruction of the family unit, where children are paid welfare for breeding fatherless children. Mostly white, but disproportionately black.

Destroyed families accounts for the bulk of the problem.

And... BTW... The New Deal Democrats and the Segregationist Democrats were the same people. Robert "Sheets" Byrd (D-KKK) wasn't kicked out. He was elevated to the top of the party.
