Donald Trump contradicts CDC director on coronavirus vaccine timeline rollout

No expert or anybody else has any scientifically proven information on the availability of an effective vaccine. That's "no" as in none, zero, nada. Nobody has any inherent (first hand) information about the logistics of distribution outside of the administration (including the military) other than what they have been told.

The CDC is not responsible for approving the vaccine and is on the recipient end of the distribution planning and FDA approval. (They are responsible for medical reports after the vaccine has been in use.) Their prognosis is based on second-hand information, so their accuracy is in question. Trump, with no evidence of lying outside the wishful made up claims of the Trump haters, has actually not definitively asserted anything about the availability of the vaccine. He makes best estimates based on the direct input from front line developers and testers. You trust Trump on the issue of wearing or not wearing masks? You trust Trump on how and when an effective vaccine can be made available to us all?

Even if they manage to develop an effective vaccine by October, it will take time to manufacture enough doses for essential personnel like medical workers and first responders. It will take months to manufacture and distribute doses to all Americans who want one (anti-vaxxers are a whole other problem). It will take time, after that, for the virus to subside enough that we will be able to get back to what we've come to think of as our normal lives. That's what Redfield was saying, and what Trump was denying.

You evidently are unaware that, at the cost of billions of dollars, millions (or at least a whole lot) of vaccine doses are already made and distributed on the chance that they will pass the stage three trials. All part of Operation Warp Speed, initiated in early April with $10-20 billion, with a goal (high hope) of 300 million vaccines available by January 2021 by paralleling all functions in advance rather than doing development, testing, manufacturing, and distribution serially as is usually done. If the trials succeed only essential medical workers, first responders, and other seriously at risk people will be the recipients until 2021. Nobody, including Trump, has said anything different.

These are all estimates...we have no idea what the real numbers are since Obama and Biden ordered test to be stopped in July....just a couple months after the first case, and one month after it was deemed a pandemic.

Trump closed borders to prevent the spread long before any other country did, and against the advice of many experts, and to the egregious opposition and antagonism of Democrats like Biden, Pelosi, et al, et al. He procured essential equipment (masks, apparel, ventilators, etc.) faster than anybody ever. He instituted Operation Warp Speed to get a vaccine as soon as possible -- a process never before been done -- in early April before anyone else had even thought about it.

China did not play down the virus. They quarantined the city of origin and banned all internal domestic air travel very early on. Don't confuse China's willingness to let the virus spread outside of China and/or their denying with their "playing it down."

Any vaccine in stage 3 is more than tested, please stop with this nonsense. Also keep in mind Trump changed FDA rules where they can see and evaluate the test results as they're happening vs after the stage is complete. This is streamlining the process so it's well evaluated by completion of the stage which results in quicker determinations on safety and effectiveness. The results and determinations are the same regardless if the FDA sees them real-time or after the trial stage.

 

That is the natural risk with parallel efforts. The vaccines were not untested; they were not fully tested.

Fauci mentioned this committee yesterday. He said it's independent and this board will not advise releasing a vaccine that isn't effective and safe. Fauci said if this board approves it, he will take it himself. I trust Fauci, so I doubt Trump has any control over the process, but Trump's rhetoric is inexcusable, as are the dismissals of his own experts.
