There does not seem to be a thread on this. Some of our Ambassadors communication which should be kept private has been leaked and it was not commendable about Trump. Now this sort of information and opinion is apparently part of the job of the Ambassador to give his honest opinion on things. There is nothing wrong or unusual about this. On hearing about it Theresa May said his opinion was not that of the Government but she respected his right to speak as he saw things. There was nothing wrong in an Ambassador doing this. As could be expected this threw Trump into a tantrum in which he said he would no longer deal with the British Ambassador and ripped into May saying how glad he was that she would not be PM for much longer. Frankly if it was not the UK, it could move to something like our Ambassador being sent home and a major diplomatic fall out.

The belief is that whoever leaked this is up to something. The Ambassador was due to finish his stint at the end of the year and it is expected that if we as expected we get Johnson as PM, he will change it then. However it also poses the problem that if the UK were to move him this would be seen as bowing to the US (yet again)

Frankly it shows the danger of having as President someone who cannot bear to hear someone speak negatively about him.

You can read about it here

You may find it rude but it is part of the Ambassadors's job to be honest with their country as to how they see things. What you are suggesting would be the end of freedom of speech of an Ambassador. Now everything our Ambassador said was in private, was what would be expected as part of his job. What should not have happened, what may result in the police being involved and someone being charged was the deliberate leaking of this material presumably for some ulterior motive...and it looks like Russia is not going to be blamed for this one!

Trump will know this was leaked material. Someone ought to have told Trump that is what Ambassadors do so I still believe having a President whose ego is so weak that hearing what someone genuinely thinks of him is more than he could bare is dangerous. Had this Ambassador said this in public you might have a point but what he said should never have been made public and was him acting as he should for his job.

A diplomat's job is to be diplomatic, in that they failed 100%. What they should have done now is apologise profusely and unreservedly then hunt down the individual who leaked the memo and crucify them, not make excuses.

The Ambassador was professional in his direct communications with Trump and in pubic but expressed his true opinions in private to his superiors. That is literally the definition of diplomatic. The leak of that private conversation is the only issue here.

I also don’t think Trump is in a strong position to complain about this given how free he is with petty insults and personal attacks in public speeches and on Twitter (though presumably not to people’s faces unless they’re subordinates).

so the ambassador said in private that Trump was “radiating insecurity”.... and Trumps response to this issue kinda proves him right - lol - Trump insecure fragile ego shows itself yet again

"In a sign of the damage to the US-UK relationship, Trump hit out at Sir Kim Darroch for a second day in a row, threatening to cut ties over the memos that described him as “radiating insecurity”."

As the President of the United States of America I don't think Trump has to put up with this behaviour, and if he should choose to kick butt over this we'll soon see who radiates what.

The problem is we all have our mouthes full about Trump and the Trump Administration.. and it is easy to do so anonymously but these people are diplomats, their careers depend on their ability to be diplomatic. It is not a healthy career choice, slagging off the most powerful man on earth

Trump could not have done more to prove the Ambassador right. Every infantile trait he identified Trump has exhibited since.

You seem to have evaded both of my points. What behaviour exactly shouldn’t he put up with? Do you really believe US Ambassadors don’t make exactly the same kind of negative assessments about the nations they work in? Or is this some kind of nationalistic thing and you believe the President of the USA should be given special and exclusive respect, above and beyond any other national leader?

You’ve also not addressed Trumps habit of casually flinging insults and attacks in the public domain and the weak moral position that puts him in to object to others insulting him.

Being insulted. (is that to the point enough for you?)

I have pointed out previously (if you even bothered to read what I posted) that what they should do... AS DIPLOMATS is apologise, profusely and unreservedly. It doesn't matter how this memo came out.. it was exposed and now the right thing to do....DIPLOMATICALLY... is to apologise. Not make up excuses. To again put it simply, they should do their jobs... AS DIPLOMATS

Trump is POTUS... I don't care how you feel about his insults. Did I mention the most powerful man on earth... yeah I believe I have.. clearly that fact is not sinking in for you

Horseshit. What he said was for his Government's eyes only. That's his job as the Embassador. Is there anything he said you disagree with?

No... it may have been for his Governments eyes only but now the whole world have seen it. Now you fix the problem and the right thing to do..... (once more)... is to apologise profusely and unreservedly.

Peeps this is not rocket science. It's the same thing if you're sitting in a restaurant and said something about someone, only to turn around and stare them directly in the face. You apologise profusely and unreservedly... not stick your head in the nearest flower arrangement. Preferably you don't say something rude to begin with

Oh I see. You either stand by what you said or you lie about what you said. Nah. May did what was needed. PUBLICLY and I'll bet PRIVATELY, she supported the Ambassador......she did not publicly support what the Embassador said, but I'll bet she did....privately.

    Who wouldn't?

You agree with what the bloke said but you have some whinge, notwithstanding that agreement.

just because you repeat the word horseshit continuously does not change any of the facts. It was rude... then you apologise and even more so if you're a diplomat....did I say DIPLOMAT... these people are suppose to keep a straight face under any circumstances... what was he doing slagging off the POTUS anyway, I bet it was a random email, not even a report

She says she's sorry it was leaked.... that's endorsing the insult.. what a terrible response for a leader of a country and a so called ally. Very very rude, I think Trump needs to start putting the foot down on these matters. Clearly he has been far too lenient and these people think they can treat him and his family like crap.

No, she did not say she was sorry. She said it was 'unfortunate.' What else could she say? The Embassador was right...you agree he was right......what he said was for his PMs eyes only...it was leaked...so suck it up Princesses Donald and Scarlet Witch.

mmm... I don't know.... Trump may decide not to suck it up... could be problematic for the UK

btw is that true.. it was for PM's eyes only, what sort of classification did it have? That places a whole new dynamic on this issue

I imagine (using common sense) it was classified for the PM (and her top advisors) only.

As for Trump's ego. I doubt anyone gives a stuff. What that Ambassador said was true. You agreed it was true, so why are you bleating?
