Explain to a non-American why it makes sense to change Congress every two years!

Discussion in 'Political Opinions & Beliefs' started by chris155au, May 28, 2020.

?

How often should congress be changed?

  1. Every two years

  2. Every four years

  3. LESS than every two years

  4. MORE than every four years

Yeah, I know that. Still an election every two years though.

Yeah, but it's still a potential change every two years.

Still a change though isn't it? Even if one seat is flipped.

I don't see why the people can't "fix the problem" two years later in the Presidential/Congress elections.

If the government is doing an incredibly bad job do you really want to wait around almost half a decade to finally vote them out. I'd rather have some of them out the door in a couple years.

I agree. 4 years makes more sense for the House. Granted, parliamentary systems are better in general than our system anyway.

Much of our Constitution is great, but I just think some of the legislative structure is broken. Also, we might be best with a dual executive system. Many nations have both a president and a prime minister, which handle different duties. Presidents are usually directly elected, while Prime Ministers usually aren't.

"Second police officer dies by suicide after Capitol attack"

    https://thehill.com/homenews/house/536189-second-police-officer-dies-by-suicide-after-capitol-attack

""I have officers who were not issued helmets prior to the attack who have sustained brain injuries. One officer has two cracked ribs and two smashed spinal discs. One officer is going to lose his eye, and another was stabbed with a metal fence stake," Papathanasiou said."

No guarantee that the riot was the catalyst. Seems that you are deliberately sensationalising.

Compared to the Trump supporter body count?

I think all the Trump supporters and BLM supporters that kill cops should be in prison for life

And you recognise that the BLM body count is FAR more than the Capitol riot body count?

Our Constitution was drafted by people who distrusted government. At that time, most states elected people to 1 year legislative terms. The 2 year house term was a compromise between those who wanted the House of Representatives to serve only 1 year terms and those who wanted them to serve 3 years terms to allow for the fact that at the time, travel to and from Washington wasn't quick or easy for some of the representatives. They feared that if they had long terms, they would camp out in Washington once elected and not represent their constituents so much as they would represent whatever clique they fell into in the capitol.

They WERE the government weren't they?

Why would a representative do that? They would be destined to loose.

Not really. They were more the representatives of the many state governments to the constitutional convention.

Maybe today, but not so much in 1780 when they were rich, white landed gentry elected by their rich, white gentry friends who had a Fear of Missing Out

Okay, then they were state government. So they "distrusted" themselves?

    Missing out on what?

Not a defense. Just making the point that the Capitol riot wasn't as deadly as the months long BLM riots.

and Trump's mishandling of the virus caused more deaths than the capital riots....

but the Capital riots were still wrong, attacking the Capital to overturn an election is an attack on democracy

Are you saying that if Clinton or Biden had been President last year, that there would have been no more than 5 COVID deaths? :roflol:

I never suggested that it wasn't wrong. It was evil.
