Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg supports an idea called universal basic income.

Both my Parents worked thru the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties. I have never envied the wealthy or the better off. They have always been the source of my income and my financial betterment. I have also never known anyone, including myself, who didn't prosper in proportion to personal output and sacrifice. Including healthy doses of prayer, faith and good fortune. The harder and smarter everyone worked, the better off they became. And the more they slouched, cut corners, and generally effed off, the worse off they became. So I cannot fathom your malice towards the wealthy as a blanket excuse for those who don't do as well.

 

Yeah no one ever talks about how to pay for it, like somehow the robots are going to do it.

 

Well clearly Zuckerberg would prefer an Obama comparison to a Trump one, but I think Trump showed how to approach the Presidency from a business perspective. Just like any business venture, Trump saw a voting demographic that was under served by the current political system, and picked out issues that they favored and found a niche to overthrow the Republican Party establishment. Remember that 15 of the 16 other primary candidates were all basically offering the same thing; slight variations to a theme (Rand Paul was offering a product that too few were interested in), and Trump offered something different.

Zuckerberg is fishing for his issue, and UBI could be that. Mark Cuban is currently doing the same thing.

 

Your scenario can work in high volume manufacturing where you literally do the exact same job several, or several hundred times a day. That scenario doesnt work for a plumber that spends half of his day in a car, or an IT repair company where a single job could take 10 minutes or 10 hours.

 

It would be very interesting if he tried it. I wonder if he would run as a democrat though. As we saw during this past election, the party chooses who will run, then runs a sham primary in order to give people the illusion of having a choice.

 

Zuckerberg isn't thinking Friedman and Murray. The thread is about Zuckerberg and his proposal. UBI supporters are not in favor of replacing the social welfare system, they want an addition to it. You're idea of replacement is just a thought piece among a handful of libertarian thinkers, not anything like an actual proposal that would happen.

 

Obviously he would prefer to run as a Democrat, but I'm not clear that the party would fight him in the same way they opposed Sanders. You're right that the Democratic party primaries are just window dressing for whoever the smoke filled room picks out, but the smoke filled room might be more open to a Zuckerberg.

This is where the Trump model breaks down. Trump wanted to overthrow the establishment, but Zuckerberg and Cuban want to become part of it.

We need a program that teaches people skills for jobs that need to be done. We need a program that teaches people responsibility and how to make good choices.
